Also that is Not Jerry & Carolyn Foley driving the Mercer, I’m not sure who those people are but the Foley’s are my grandparents. If there were other Mercer’s entered in the show, its possible the photo is of another car, not the winner. Which could be why the year was off.

The GT40 in question was in fact the first to use the name Mirage. It has an interesting history, which we will profile in a story next week on the Cars of David Hobbs.

Checked and the Gulf colors are absolutely correct for the cars of John Wyer (?) Racing. Now the rear fenders were modified by JWR but they appear to me as being a bit excessive. Can somebody tell me whether the JWR’s GT40′s were ever known as Mirages as were the later BRM and Ford Cosworth cars by that JWR Team (a team that btw also ran the famous Gulf Porsches).

Joel and Ann Finn have an amazing collection, although we don’t believe its open to the public. Joel knows the era well, having written a book about the 1959 United States GP at Sebring, as well as other seminal books. All seem to be out of print, but are worth tracking down.

Joel also extensively raced the Cooper T51 on the vintage circuit.

I believe those colors to be correct for 1968. I believe I saw this car race in Europe. I’m not sure about the rear fenders. I agree with you that they don’t look quite right. I may have some photographs of this car “in the day”.

Was just wondering whether those rear fenders on the GT 40 were according to original specs, and were the Gulf colors period correct for 1968 ? Can anybody answer my questions and solve my doubts ?
