Thanks for the comment. Jamie and I went through my images from the 2009 Historic/Vintage season from Laguna, Sears and Portland. The result are fourteen images including the cover and thirteen months each with an image, January 2010 to January 2011. The cars range from an 1935 Alfa Romeo 8C 35 through a brace of Buagatti’s for the pre-war onto Ferrari, Cobra, Talbot Lago, Porsche, Genie, Jaguar, Scarab, BMW Batmobile, Aston Martin and finish off with a Lola Can-Am car. Print quality is high and the whole presentation brought a smile to my face. See you at the next race. Dennis

So…from your statement, this seems to be the case…a 1969 917 rebuilt to 1970 917K spec. Again, there was no 1969 917K ( Kurz..or short tail). Only a “917″. The short tail came about from testing in Zeltweg, Austria by the Wyer team, and the idea is creditied to Wyer team manager John Horsman. He notice that the original 917 tail “flaps” were in full upright fixed position, and were perfectly clean of bug splatter unlike the front of the car during this late summer test. This gave him the idea that the flaps were totally useless and not in the windstream at all. That night, with tin snips, sheet metal and tape, they fashioned a make-shift “K” upswept tail…and the car was immediately 3 secs/lap faster and more stable.

Good morning Wil.
Thanks for the heads up on the 917K. Just to be sure I double checked with the team manager who runs this car. This is what I was told. This is a 1969 917K. This car ran and won the 1970 Daytona race and was fitted with the later body type and other modifications too bring it up to date for the 1970 Daytona race.
Again thanks for the comment. It is nice to know someone out there is reading our captions.

The reference to the Wyer-Gulf 917K being a 1969 car is probably wrong, unless it pertains to the original build in another 917 configuration. As shown, it would be at least 1970 vintage, as it would mimic the build-type showing the third pane window on the upper cowl used at Daytona in 1970 and 1971 (better to see the road ahead on the steep banking !!). Also, there were no 917K’s in 1969.
