Andretti, Alfa Romeo, Formula 1 Drivers and 400 of the World’s Finest Historic Race Cars on Track
The world’s most perfect auto racing weekend. That’s how the 35th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races presented by Toyota have been described. The
premier vintage event in North America boasts 400 of the finest race cars entered in 14 groups spanning every era of motorsports history.
Where else can you experience a 1908 Mercedes Grand Prix, a 1920 Bugatti T-13, 1946 Delage D6, 1950 Lotus Eleven LM, 1960 Maserati T-61 and Aston Martin DB4/GT, 1964 Jaguar E Type and Alfa Romeo GT2, 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, 1970 Javelin TA and a 1980 BMW M1 all on track?
The event is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and takes place on August 15-17 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with a salute to Alfa Romeo and Formula Junior, the original support series for Formula One. Rolex will present a selection of historic automobiles in their “Moments in Time” display including the1938 Alfa Romeo 8C-2900B Mille Miglia Spyder that Phil Hill drove.
The special guest is Mario Andretti who will participate in a variety of events, including driving laps in his Formula One Championship winning Lotus 79.
This year’s Toyota Race of Legends will pit current Panasonic Toyota F1 driver Timo Glock to race against a field of F1 masters. Collectively they have won 22 Grand Prix, a Formula 1 World Championship, six Le Mans 24 hour races and two Indianapolis 500 wins.
The eight-lap race features Derek Bell who returns to defend last year’s win against an impressive lineup that includes Eddie Cheever, Johnny Herbert, Jean-Pierre Jarier, Alan Jones, Danny Sullivan, Patrick Tambay and John Watson.
Fans can participate in autograph sessions with Andretti on Friday and Saturday. The Race of Legends drivers will also have autograph sessions on both Friday and Saturday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. in the Race of Legends compound at Expo.
The Ferrari Shell Historic Challenge will be joining the weekend with not only Ferrari but Maserati and Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo cars, including an ex-Tazio Nuvalari Alfa Romeo 8C/35, ex-Sterling Moss-Maserati 250F and a Roger Penske/Sunoco 512M.
In addition to the Toyota Historic Racecar exhibition laps with Eddie Lawson and Scooter Patrick, there will be a parade lap of significant Alfa Romeo’s.
