Large F5000 Field at U.S. Vintage Grand Prix
The Formula 5000 Drivers Association announced that nearly 20 historic Formula 5000 cars have entered to compete in the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix event at Watkins Glen on September 5th – 7th.
If you need yet another reason to attend this weekend’s races, watching a strong field of booming F5000 cars should do it.
The field of entries is rich with a variety of different makes, such as Chevron, Crossle, Eagle, Lola, Lotus, McLaren, McKee, McRae and Surtees, spanning production years from 1968 to 1976. Drivers will compete for the New York Governor’s Cup and trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes in their Class. The Formula 5000 Drivers Association will also award a Championship Trophy based on points accumulated over the 2008 racing season at the three main events held at Infineon, Road America and Watkins Glen.
According to Seb Coppola, president of the Formula 5000 Drivers Association, which is organizing the 40th Anniversary reunion races and celebration: “It is fantastic to have a large field of Formula 5000 return to Watkins Glen more than 30 years after these cars competed in professional races at this storied track. Drivers and fans will enjoy a thrilling weekend they have not experienced since the mid 1970s.”
Rounding out the race weekend at Watkins Glen will be a celebration of the heritage of Formula 5000. Many former F5000 drivers from the original series are expected to be at Watkins Glen for this event, including Tony Adamowicz (1969 U.S. Champion), Warwick Brown (1975 Tasman Champion), Graham McRae (1972 U.S. Champions and 1971-1973 Tasman Champion) and Brian Redman (1974-1976 U.S. Champion).
These Champions will be recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Motorsports presented by Vintage Motorsport magazine and the Formula 5000 Drivers Association. Autographs, receptions and other celebration activities will be held in a special area within the Watkins Glen paddock.
