Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction 2011 – Preview

1986 Porsche 962 IMSA

Bonhams will hold its 14th annual Monterey Week auction at the Quail Lodge in Carmel, California. The two-day sale will take place on Thursday and Friday, August 18-19, 2011.

The 2011 Bonhams Quail Lodge auction, held in connection with The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering, will feature approximately 130 cars and motorcycles, highlighted by the1927 Bentley 6 1/2 Litre Sports Tourer, 1930 Bugatti Type 43 Supercharged Sports 2/4 Seater, 1954 AJS E95 Porcupine motorcycle and 1953 Ferrari 212 Inter Coupe by Vignale.

Bonhams also features many significant race cars, including the 1987 and 1988 12 Hours of Sebring-winning Porsche 962, 1966 Porsche 906, 1987 Porsche 962 Group C, 1979 Porsche 935 and the 1959 Sadler-Meyer Special.

“Throughout its 14-year history during the Pebble Beach Car Week, our annual automotive sale has always been renowned for its focus on competition cars,” said Mark Osborne, Head of the Motoring at Bonhams. “Some of the most legendary and awarded racing cars in history have been represented by Bonhams and this year we’re proud to continue that tradition.”

In 2010, Bonhams offered 102 automobiles for sale, with 79 finding a new owner, reflecting an 77.5% sales rate. Total sales volume was $18,029,690, inclusive of buyer’s premiums. The average price per car sold was $228,224. Top sale went to a 1972 Porsche 917 Interserie Spyder at $3,967,000. (See 2010 Bonhams Quail Lodge Report).

Admission to the 2011 Bonhams Quail Lodge auction comes with purchase of a catalog for $75, which admits two people. Previews for the motorcars and automobilia will take place on Wednesday, August 17th and Thursday, August, 18th from 10:00am – 5:00pm. Please note that entry to Bonhams’ previews and auctions does not require a ticket to The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, which is a separate event held by Quail Lodge on Friday, August 19th.

1927 Bentley 6 1/2 Litre Sports Tourer – Estimate unavailable. Coachwork by Vanden Plas; original bodied, matched numbers; one of 19 built with open Vanden Plas body, with only nine retaining original bodywork.
1930 Bugatti Type 43 Supercharged Sports 2/4 Seater
1930 Bugatti Type 43 Supercharged Sports 2/4 Seater – Estimate $1,300,000-$1,500,000. Same running gear as Type 35B; 3rd in class at Pebble Beach Concours in 2006.
1954 AJS E95 Porcupine
1954 AJS E95 Porcupine – Estimate $750,000-$950,000. One of just four E95s completed by the factory, the Porcupine (so nicknamed because of the spiked cooling fins on its cylinder head) was created as a works racer by British manufacturer AJS and is perhaps one of the most legendary motorcycles in history owing to its brief, sunburst racing success and rarity.
1979 BMW M1 Pro Car Frank Stella
1979 BMW M1 Pro Car – Estimate $450,000-$600,000. Special ordered by racer Peter Gregg, the car was built by BMW Motorsport GmbH to BMW Pro Car Group 4 specifications and painted by Frank Stella as a tribute to the memory of his and Gregg’s mutual friend, the great Formula 1 Grand Prix-winning driver Ronnie Peterson; only BMW car ever painted by an authorized BMW Art Car artist for a private client; sold on behalf of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

1962 Cooper-Buick Type 61 Monaco
1962 Cooper Monaco MK IV – Estimate $225,000-$275,000. Raced by multiple Formula One World Championship driver and Indy 500 winner Graham Hill, this car appeared on the cover of Moto Racing magazine in February 1963 as a result of its win at Riverside by driver William Sturgis. It has recently been restored and is ready for historic competition.
1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Torpedo Sports Tourer
1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom I – Estimate $750,000-$1,000,000. Originally commissioned by Sahib Bahadur of India, officially known as Umed Singh II, Maharaja of Kotah, for the purpose of tiger hunting; powered by an 8.0-liter, 6-cylinder engine with dual-spark ignition that’s set to a low gearing ratio, allowing it to creep powerfully through the roughshod jungles of Rajasthan; contains a hidden safe, a nickel-plated hissing snake horn, mounted Howdah gun (double-barrel shotgun in pistol form), rifle stand in the rear passenger compartment, two powerful searchlights for night spotting, a mountable Lantaka cannon, attached to the bumper, and a machine gun mounted on an attached, matching trailer.
1959 Sadler-Meyer Special
1959 Sadler-Meyer Special – Estimate $650,000-$750,000. The three-time winning and three-time record-setting Giant’s Despair Hill Climb racer was built by legendary Canadian engineer Bill Sadler for John van Meyer. Together with its extraordinary hill climb titles, the car has also competed with distinction in numerous races throughout the US and has proven itself one of the greatest specials made.
1966 Porsche 906 Carrera Competition Coupe
1966 Porsche 906 Carrera Competition Coupe – Estimate $900,000-$1,100,000. This is the model that completely dominated the 1966 Hockeheim 500, not to mention winning its class that year in the Monza 1000, Targa Florio, Spa 1000, Austrian 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans. This particular car was campaigned with success in Australia before being raced by subsequent owners in Hong Kong and Macau.
1986 Porsche 962 IMSA GTP
1986 Porsche 962 IMSA GTP – Estimate $800,000-$1,000,000. This Porsche 962 was the consecutive winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1987 and 1988. Driven to success multiple times by Jochen Mass and Bobby Rahal, the car’s wins include – besides Sebring – Laguna Seca 300, Mid-Ohio 500, Sears Point 300, Columbus 300, and Del Mar, not to mention several podium placements in other races.
1979 Porsche 935
1979 Porsche 935 – Estimate $550,000-$650,000. Driven by Rusty French to multiple podium placements including winning the 1989 British GT Championship, this car also won the Monterey Historic Races in both 2008 and 2009.
1987 Porsche 962 Group C
1987 Porsche 962 European Group C – Estimate $500,000-$600,000. Campaigned extensively in the 1987 World Sports Prototype Championship driven primarily by Mauro Baldi and often co-driven by Jonathan Palmer with several podium finishes and one victory.
