Walter Cronkite raced one. And he was awesome. Then again this 1960 Lancia Appia GTE Zagato is pretty special too being one of only 350 built and one of just 116 with the rare and desirable covered headlights. Clothed in elegant Zagato bodywork with square-cut wheel well openings and bespoke interior, these cars brought visual appeal to a fine Lancia chassis otherwise overlooked for uncharacteristically staid bodywork. Better still, the 1,089cc V4 engine delivered fine performance when paired with the lightweight aluminum bodywork, and Appia Zagatos raced at venues across the globe. Like the 1959 12 Hours of Sebring, where Cronkite learned the long wheelbase provided high speed stability and CBS learned their increasingly popular newsman was risking life and limb pursuing a different kind of lead. Their requests that he stop racing were taken to heart and Cronkite hung up his helmet for good shortly thereafter. We love these Zagatos for their beautiful coachwork and interiors, strong performance, event eligibility and their incredibly comfortable high speed cruising. If the Zagato were ours, we’d enjoy every historic rally from the fine confines of the car’s tan and chocolate leather seats. Find the Lancia for sale here on eBay in Bedford Hills, New York.
