Perfect Canvas – 1959 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce

Although value is damaged when great sports cars are race prepared long after their build date, examples like this 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce present a special opportunity to drivers more interested in having fun than making money. As the price of rare and desirable cars rises, the likelihood that owners will drive them in anger or turn a wrench on the car themselves decreases. This, of course, makes perfect sense as the car’s value will be hurt with use, road damage, or the mistakes of a novice mechanic. But much of the joy associated with sports cars comes from just these activities and the inevitable failures that take place along the way. Which is where a car like this Veloce Spider comes in. Without its original engine or transmission and bearing the scars of a racing career that started in the 70s, it does not possess the kind of originality nor race history for which collectors shell out large sums. What it does possess is some trick racing gear like circle track springs, adjustable rear spring perches, a built 1300 Giulietta motor, and a 5 speed transmission. Photos show the car to be a well-maintained 70s-era race car with solid and orderly mechanicals, a straight body and stripped interior with disco perfect seats and a dated roll bar. It is, in short, the perfect canvas on which to build one’s own ultimate Giulietta Spyder. We, for one, would build it into a stout road rally car by leaving the current mechanicals in place and by trading the roll bar and seats for shallow vintage-style buckets in period correct upholstery. We love the look of the cut down windscreen and would bolster the Alfa Romeo’s street racer looks with a body-matched hard cover over the passenger seat and maybe even a faired-in headrest. On a numbers-matching Veloce these actions would be criminal. On this car they’re just another chapter in its long and interesting story. Best of all, because it isn’t a numbers matching car, the next owner should be able to get into this Alfa Romeo with plenty of money left to follow through with his or her wishes.
