Ultimate Multitasker – 1959 Lotus 7 Series 1

Lotus 7s like this 1959 Series 1 are some of the finest dual purpose cars ever built. On one hand the Lotus is a spirited street car with a full windshield, fenders, lights and a full size spare tire. On the other it’s a shockingly light weight racer with Brookland wind screens, a roll bar and incredible performance from a small and race-class-legal engine. The result is a car that can be driven to track, competitively raced against even non-street legal cars and then driven home. This particular car looks ready for both endeavors and even a trip to the show field. The simple aluminum bodywork is polished to a mirror shine with the exception of the nose and fenders, which have been painted red. The no-frills interior displays appropriate red leather with white piping. And while the engine shown in photos displays some visual wear, the seller indicates that the next buyer has the choice of one of two engines: a full race 948cc or a milder 1275cc for fast road driving. Whichever engine the next owner chooses they stand to enjoy a nicely patinated, fast, and competitive car. If it were ours take the 1275cc and enjoy the 7 on the road and in any races that would allow the larger engine. Find the 7 for sale here on the New England Classic Car Company’s website for $38,500.
