1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Berlinetta and the 1938 Talbot-Lago T23 Teardrop Coupe (credit: Simon Clay © 2012 courtesy RM Auctions)

RM Auctions announced more featured offerings for the August 17–18, 2012 Monterey sale, a 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Berlinetta and a 1938 Talbot-Lago T23 Teardrop Coupe. The 410 S, chassis 0594 CM, is the only example built with a closed body, while the Talbot-Lago, chassis 93064, is the sole Jeancart-style Teardrop originally built upon a four-liter T23 chassis.

The Ferrari and Talbot-Lago join 120 automobiles slated for the 2012 Monterey Auction, including the previously announced Pebble Beach ‘Best of Show’ winning 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann and Rossi Sport Cabriolet.

Held during the same weekend as the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, the two-day RM Auctions Monaco 2012 sale presented a collection of more than 90 automobiles, 100 Ducati motorcycles and three boats.

1931 Cord L29 Cabriolet sold for $220,000

Worldwide Auctioneers held its Houston Classic Auction 2012 on Saturday, May 5th at the La Torretta Lake Resort in Montgomery, Texas, resulting in more than $7 million in sales and an 85% sell-through rate.

The 11th annual Houston Classic Auction saw nearly 120 motor cars cross the auction block, in addition to a selection of memorabilia from the Paul J. Meyer Estate Collection.

One of only three known surviving examples of its kind, the Horch 853A was designed by Fritz Fiedler, who later created the BMW 315 and 328. Displaying coachwork by prominent German coachbuilders Erdmann and Rossi, it was the most expensive car offered by Auto Union, and came equipped with a 120 bhp 5.0-liter straight-eight engine and such modern features as vacuum-boosted hydraulic brakes, overdrive in all four gears, and a unique hydraulic jacking system.

Branson’s Leap Day EF3 tornado, just 7 weeks before the scheduled Spring Branson auction date, injected more than a little uncertainty into this year’s version of the Cox family’s semi-annual event.

The Convention Center’s highrise Hilton hotel featured prominently in news reports of the disaster, with curtains flying out of multiple smashed windows.

RM Auctions has assembled more than 90 automobiles for the 2012 Monaco sale, including one of two 1957 Ferrari 625 TRC Spiders ever built; a 1966 Ferrari 206 S Dino Spyder, offered for the first time in 40 years; 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider; and the Ferrari-engined Hydroplane racing boat, ARNO XI.

Ford Falcon Futura Sprint, class winner at the 1963 Monte Carlo Rally (estimate €150,000 – 200,000)

The Bonhams Les Grandes Marques à Monaco 2012 auction will be held 11th May at the Musée des Voitures du Prince in Monte Carlo. The 26th annual sale coincides with the Monaco Historic Grand Prix, which is held every two years on the Monaco F1 street course.

Headline offerings at the 2012 Bonhams Monaco auction include examples from Bugatti, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, Maserati and Facel Vega.

1931 Cadillac V12 Roadster sold for $165,000

Mecum Auctions held their inaugural Houston sale on April 13-14, 2012 at the Reliant Center in Houston, Texas, resulting in total sales exceeding $18.5 million and an 80% sell-through rate. Mecum offered more than 700 vehicles during the two-day auction, with more than 12,000 attendees taking part in the weekend event.

Dana Mecum, President and CEO of Mecum Auctions commented, “There has always been a perception that no collector car auction company has ever been able to have a successful auction in Houston.

2012 marked the tenth anniversary of Barrett-Jackson’s first sale in Palm Beach. Its success has conclusively proved the attraction of B-J’s “event” format and led to other B-J events in Las Vegas and Orange County.

Each of the Barrett-Jackson auctions is distinctly, if subtly, different, as Craig Jackson described in his Friday morning press conference. Here, for example, there is a large consignment of late model cars, “which sell well in South Florida” Craig said. 69 of the 435 lots were model year 2000 or later, 15.9% of the full docket.

1997 McLaren F1 GTR Longtail, Chassis 028R

Bonhams will offer the ex-GTC Gulf Team Davidoff 1997 McLaren F1 GTR Longtail FIA GT Endurance Racing Coupe at its 2012 Quail Lodge auction, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, August 16th and 17th at Quail Lodge in Carmel, California.

The McLaren F1 GTR at the 2012 Bonhams Quail Lodge auction, chassis 028R, is the 28th McLaren F1 GTR produced by the British McLaren Cars factory in Woking, Surrey, the last of that final year’s batch of only ten highly developed ‘Longtail’ cars.

This year marked RM’s tenth year in South Florida with a sale that has become one of the anchors of the annual auction calendar. After beginning on the polo field in Boca Raton (where the sand is like polishing compound) this sale took off when it moved to the Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale in 2007.

2012 had the most cars ever, an auctioneering test of 566 cars across the block on top of plentiful automobilia starting each day, held the weekend after RM’s Amelia Island catalog auction.

1963 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6, ex-Mickey Thompson

Mecum Auctions will celebrate its Silver anniversary at Dana Mecum’s 25th Original Spring Classic Auction, scheduled for May 15-20, 2012, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana. This year’s sale will see more than 2,100 vehicles will cross the auction block in Indy.

Dana Mecum commented, “This is what I envisioned my auction to be in the beginning, it took 25 years for everyone else to catch up!”

This year marked RM Auctions’ fourteenth year at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. The $23,102,000 total sale, RM’s fourth Amelia Island auction over $20 million, brought the total sold at the venue to over $200 million, $213,888,175 to be exact.

Five lots brought over a million dollars headlined by the Cord Front Drive L-29 “Hayes Coupe” which sold for $2.2 million, more than twice its last auction appearance. Three Ferraris and a beautifully presented Aston Martin DB5 Vantage Volante made up the balance of the million dollar sellers.

Gooding & Company kicked off the Amelia Island auctions with their famed healthy breakfast (if you like bacon and sausage and omelets and really strong coffee) and a sterling lineup of Porsche products, not only from the featured collection of Matt Drendel but also a number of others calculated to get the juices flowing within anyone who appreciates high performance from tiny engines.

26 of the 77 lots offered were Porsches, or Porsche-powered, 33.8% of the total. When the final hammer fell after a long day in the hot and stuffy auction tent they totaled $ $23,855,700 with commission, 66.2% of the sale’s total dollars.

It was decidedly Porsche-centric.

1911 Rolls-Royce 40/50 hp Silver Ghost Roi des Belges Tourer

RM Auctions will offer ‘without reserve’ more than 175 vehicles from the Aalholm Automobil Museum during a single-day auction, 12 August, 2012 in southern Denmark.

Baron J.O. Raben-Levetzau founded the Aalholm Automobil Museum in 1964 on the Island of Lolland, just west of Nysted, against the Aalholm Castle, one of Denmark’s oldest medieval castles.
