Porsche Club Members meet at Schloss Solitude in Germany, 1960

For six decades, the history of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has been inseparably associated with the worldwide enthusiasm of the Porsche Club scene. 60 years ago, on 26 May 1952, seven passionate Porsche drivers founded the Porsche Club Hohensyburg in Westphalia. According to its articles of association, the common goal of this first club was to “unite all Porsche drivers in friendship and comradeship”. The creation of this first club was the foundation stone for a long and unique success story that has become a global phenomenon.

Championship racer and innovator Jim Hall was honored on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at the Road Racing Drivers Club (RRDC) Evening with Jim Hall presented by Firestone. This was the fourth annual RRDC West Coast banquet, held prior to the running of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. The dinner was also supported by Chevrolet and Honda.

Hall, whose accomplishments ranged from the 1960s, with the remarkable series of Chaparral race cars he built, to the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s as an IndyCar team owner, was interrogated in the style of the Late Show with David Letterman by RRDC president Bobby Rahal.

It was a long time coming; a near complete authorized biography of a giant in American sports car circles, Carroll Hall Shelby.

The author is a surprising choice, British author Rinsey Mills, surprising only because in a couple of his earlier books on Shelby he seemed of the opinion that the British side of the AC Cobra story wasn’t being given due credit, a common failing among British automotive historians who sometimes say A.C. did most of it until that cowpoke came along.

I think not. Here’s why.

When I was in high school and college in the late ‘40s, early ‘50s, a car was the centerpiece of a young man’s life. Chevy, Ford and Plymouth – they were all good and created lifelong memories. Then, when you drove your car to Monterey and heard an Jaguar XK120 boom through the old Pebble Beach circuit, you knew where your life was headed.

It began slowly at first. One reader sought a particular Talbot-Lago and another was selling a late-production 289 Cobra. We made a few phone calls. Sent a few e-mails. Andy Warhol, Car (Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible), ca. 1958.

An exhibition examining Andy Warhol’s fascination with automotive vehicles as products of American consumer society is on display until May 13, 2012 at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Warhol and Cars: American Icons exhibit features more than forty drawings, paintings, photographs and related archival material spanning from 1946 to 1986. The exhibition traces the development of Warhol’s work with cars throughout his career. Warhol and Cars highlights include drawing created in the 1940s; works on paper of the 1950s, as well as paintings and prints from the 60s, 70s and 80s. The majority of the work in the exhibition is from The Andy Warhol Museum’s collection.

An original BMW M1 racing car that was hand-painted by Warhol will be on display in the entrance gallery.

The car whose name means “she goes” will be the focus of activities on April 21-22, 2011 at the International Motor Racing Research Center at Watkins Glen.

The Elva is described as “deceptively simple—and surprisingly competitive” by the publisher of an award-winning book about the marque, Elva: The Cars, The People, The History, by racing historian János Wimpffen.
