The bigger, the better – that could be the most appropriate motto for the 2012 Retromobile Salon, which opened its doors for the 37th consecutive year February 1-5, in Paris. Although the main location, the Porte de Versailles Exhibition Center remained the same as in the past years, Europe’s biggest classic car exhibition and fair moved to larger halls, the nearly 410 stands with more than 400 vehicles on display occupying 33,000 square meters (355,000 square feet), 6,000 square meters more than in 2011.

For auto enthusiasts in Tokyo and its surrounding areas, the end of January means the New Year Meeting, an annual event that brings together an almost unimaginable array of cars and assorted vehicles, both domestic and foreign, for a day of auto-sensory overload. It’s a car lover’s dream.

Organized by the JCCA, the Japan Classic Car Association, this event attracts huge numbers of cars, car clubs and fans. The venue is located in the city’s waterfront district (Odaiba), so there’s no shortage of space – and the promoters have made the most of it.

The Goodwood Breakfast Club will remain free to all visitors. This allows car and motorcycle connoisseurs to enjoy a Sunday morning drive through the quiet West Sussex country roads down to Goodwood, where they are able to meet like-minded enthusiasts, admire some fabulous machinery and eat a tasty breakfast, before heading back home in time for the Sunday roast, to do a spot of gardening and DIY, or simply put their feet up and watch the Grand Prix.

The Cartier “Travel With Style” Concours was held March 12, 2011 in New Delhi, India.

Royalty from India and abroad, a philanthropist, Formula One, sports car and aircraft interior designers, a former supermodel who still turns male heads with her daughter, a singer, a French actor, a British newspaper editor, a trio of Americans – two industrialists and a professional sports franchise owner and a construction equipment manufacturer descended upon New Delhi not very long ago, to judge the Cartier Travel with Style Concours 2011 at the city’s Jaipur Polo Grounds as connoisseurs of cars, beauty, taste and design.

Each car was judged to the standards of the Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance from guidelines established by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and by the appropriate car clubs consulted by officials for this event. Automobiles were evaluated for authenticity, state of preservation or restoration and elegance. Best of Show at the 2011 Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance went to the 1934 Duesenberg Model J bodied by Murphy of Stephen Finn.

The Danville Concours d’Elegance 2011 was held September 17-18 on the streets of historic downtown Danville, California. The 7th annual event weekend included a traditional Concours, plus a Tour d’Elegance rally and Dinner d’Elegance celebration at the Blackhawk Museum.

Headline entrants at the 2011 Danville Concours d’Elegance included the 1959 Aston Martin DB 2/4 Mk II; 1929 Duesenburg SJ Lebaron Dual Cowl Phaeton; 1970 Maserati Ghibli Spyder; 1968 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider; 1957 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Roadster; Ferrari 250 GT/L Competition; McLaren M8C Can-Am; among others.

The 2011 Louisville Concours d’Elegance at Churchill Downs benefitting Brooklawn Child and Family Services provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the 1915 Duesenberg racing car of Joe Freeman to be driven on the historic Churchill Downs track.

The Duesenberg is one of five team cars built by brothers Fred and Augie Duesenberg between 1913-1916 and finished 2nd in the 1916 Indianapolis 500. The car is now the second-oldest Duesenberg known to exist and has also been driven at venues as widespread as the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Monterey Historics.

There were just six Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupes constructed for the 1964 and 1965 World Championship racing season. They were hand built tools to do a specific job: win the World Championship for America and Cobra creator Carroll Shelby.

Speed Style Beauty was held 25-27 November 2011 at the Portside Wharf in Brisbane, Australia.

Speed Style Beauty, a display of rolling art from over a century of car design got off to a strong start as one of Australia’s newest but most impressive car shows with vehicles as diverse and disparate as a 1910 Brush and a 2011 Ferrari California on display all in the name of charity.

The Belgian Racing Legends exhibition is currently held at Autoworld located in Jubel Park in the centre of Brussels, Belgium. The exposition, focused on the Belgian gentlemen drivers and their cars, will continue until 15 January 2012.

One of the key features with setting up Belgian Racing Legends was to honor the late Jacques Swaters and his exploits under the Ecurie Nationale Belge banner and afterwards with his own racing team Ecurie Francorchamps.

What a recovery! Two and three years ago, the Detroit manufacturers were almost dead, and their exhibit spaces reflected that. The Los Angeles Auto Show was alive in 2011. Domestic and import manufacturers have a ton of enticing new product.

As you wander through thinking “which one would I buy?” you can’t narrow it down to just one. The Toyota/Subaru joint venture RWD sport coupe is number one on my list.

The 62nd annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has begun the search for 200 of the finest automobiles and motorcycles. Features for the 2012 event include Maharaja Cars and the marques of Mercer and Fiat. Special classes will recognize Saoutchik Coachwork, AC and AC Cobra, Sport Customs, and German motorcycles.

The 2011 event saw the 1968 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale of Clive Joy win Best of Show by Judges, while Corrado Lopresto’s 1942 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS was awarded Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este, the Best of Show by Public Referendum.
