Of course Glenn is right. ’69 Daytona was definitely not Chevrolet’s first. Not only did Chaparral win at the Nurburgring in 1966 (Hill/Bonnier, 2D) and at Brands Hatch in 1967 (Hill/Spence, 2F), but also won Sebring in 1965 (Hall/Sharp, 2).

Having said that, the organizers did a fantastic job in assembling so many winning cars. Having been involved is similar efforts, but on a much lesser scale, for historic race weekends, I can appreciate the enormity of the task and applaud the results.

In 1960 when I was 10 years old Jim Rathman’s car “The Ken Paul Special was on display at Van Winkle Pontiac in Dallas.. I talked my father into driving me by so I could see it and he finally agreed to… We parked and got out to look it over and a salesman told me I could sit in it and of course I did….

Great article! I have one comment regarding the information for the 1969 winning Penske Lola-Chevy. You say the 69 race was Chevolet’s first international win. I would have thought that Jim Hall’s Team Chaparral wins in Europe at Nurburgring 1000 (using the Chevy 327 in the 2D in 1966) and the Brands Hatch win (using the Chevy 427 in the 2F in 1967) would qualify for 1st International wins for Chevolet?

Thanks for the compliment, which should also be extended to Ed Lenahan. Even as a newbie to this arcane field Ed did a marvelous job of helping me cover all the Arizona auctions.
As to China, it’s a puzzle. Some prescient figures like Don Williams have been present in China since just after the doors started to crack open and I think they’ll lead the Chinese wealthy into the collecting world. If their view is influential it will be classics first. Classics are the safest sell to newcomers, and safety is still an important factor in Chinese investment. As an adviser you don’t want to raise your clients’ expectations early, and good early experiences are core to building a lasting car collecting culture.
It’s an evolving story that has intriguing implications but, as we’ve seen again and again, the tides of international collecting ebb and flow. Remember all those cars that got vacuumed up into Japan in the early 90′s? Many if not most have come back to the U.S. and Europe. Russia was sopping up cars like bread soaking up gravy a few years ago; that trade has slackened dramatically. And Greeks bought cars, too. No more.
Don’t put much faith in bubbles. It’s OK to take advantage of them, but be ready to cut and run at the first sign of unsustainable surface tension. At 1/3 of a million dollars the Speedster bubble is stretched very thin.

Just a quick correction the RSR from 1973 was not sold to Diego Febles, it was sold to the Rebaque-Van Beuren-Rojas team (RVR), the champions of Mexico and yes it was destroyed going to a race, along with the truck carrying it but with no harm to the mechanic who was driving the thing.

Once again you have submitted a great report on the prevailing auction landscape and the beasts that roam within it. Thanks for doing that.

Many of us in the Porsche 356 world were blown away by the price of the Speedster as you reported. It will be interesting to see where their prices go if the Asian market (the people with all of our money) ever discovers that any Porsche collection of worth needs to have at least one 356 Speedster, even an example with only the ‘Normal’ engine. There are several great collections across that pond. Hmmm…

I Just got Morretti’s 333SP, I put it out on displayed at Cavillino but has not moved under it’s own power in 12 years, so I missed out on displaying it at Daytona. Car came with no spares and 15 year old tires and obsoleate, but buitiful wheels.
Car was Started for first time by me last week and it does sound as good as it looks, the car is now in full MOMO decor and the Ansa boys put a in memory of G Morretti’s on the sail panel in respect to the cars first owner.
No events have been decided on for it’s first outing
If enough interest I will have pictures posted on gtcars.moon fruit.com

Great job. These events must be keep going for older to remember and teach and learn the younger. These great moments of the past must live for ever. It is a pittty that some cars did not show but nevertheless the ones appear its great. Keep going strong.

Watching all those historic and irreplaceable cars I couldn’t help think that somewhere in Daytona that weekend were a couple of vintage car insurance agents that collectively held their breath for three straight days. They probably had to be hospitalized for nervous exhaustion when they got home.

I love the photo of the two men in the Bugatti seen from the back. They are participating in a Bugatti Festival in Spain. The photo shows two people who are having a great time and there doesn’t seem to be any pressure on them. Must be after everything was over.
