Coronado Speed Festival 2011 – Results and Photos

The Coronado Speed Festival 2011 was held September 24-25 at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California.

The 14th Annual Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival saw a field of more than 250 historic racing cars take to the 1.7-mile course constructed in mere days on the runways and taxiways of the military base. Participants in the 2011 edition of the “Race at the Base” were grouped into nine different race classes, each divided according to make, age and horsepower.The following race groups were seen on the track: 1952 – 1959 Sports Racing and Production cars; 1962 – 1972 Sports Racing and Formula Cars under 2000cc; 1969 – 1980 Sports Racing and Formula Cars; 1953 – 1966 Production cars under 2000cc; 1959 – 1966 Production cars – Disc Brake; 1962 – 1966 Productions cars over 2500cc; 1965 – 1988 FIA Manufacturer Championship Cars; Historic NASCAR and 1966 – 1972 Historic Trans-Am.

Notable entries at the 2011 Fleet Week historic races included the 1957 Maserati 200Si of Ned Spieker; Tom Claridge’s 1953 Kurtis 500S; 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing of Steve Marx; Cameron Healy’s 1953 Cooper “Pooper” Porsche; 1962 Abarth Porsche of Ranson Webster; 1967 Porsche 910 of Thor Johnson; 1962 Cooper King Cobra of Donn Vickey; John Goodman’s 1972 Ferrari Sparling Special and the 1966 Ford GT40 P1061 of Jim Click.

The 2011 Coronado Speed Festival also celebrated the Centennial of Naval Aviation at its birthplace, Naval Air Station North Island. The Navy provided a visual display of the evolution of Naval aviation with static displays of jets, planes and helicopters at the entrance to the event.
