Sam Posey portraitFew in the realm of motorsports will deny that one of the most capable drivers to climb behind the wheel of a race car is Mr. Sam Posey.

Sam’s driving career started in the mid-1960s, when sports car racing in North America was building at a rapid pace. Daytona, 1966, marked the first, true international debut for this young driver. It was driving a Porsche 904 GTS along with Jim Haynes and Harry Theodoracopulos, that Posey made his entrance onto the international stage of motor racing. The trio faired well that year, starting 22nd and coming home 11th overall and 4th in class at the annual Florida classic.

Report and photos by Marshall Autry

Martini 1969 Porsche 911TJuly is a great month for vintage racing in the Northwest. A three-day event over the July 4 weekend in Seattle, the Historics with HMSA in Portland the following weekend, and finishing up in Canada the next weekend with the British Columbia Historic Motor Races.

The Vintage Racing Club of British Columbia (VRCBC) held the 12th annual British Columbia Historic Motor Races at the River’s Edge Road Course at Mission Raceway Park in Mission B.C. The spiritual and physical successor to the fabled Westwood Racing Circuit, the track is a technical 1.4 mile, nine-turn layout that combines a long straightaway for the big bore cars, and a twisty back side that lets the smaller cars make time on their high powered competitors. Throw in the great barbecue that VRCBC puts on for drivers and crews Saturday night, the car show on Sunday that helps pack the stands for the racing, and you have a wonderful vintage event.

Volvo’s are popular vintage racers in British Columbia, and there were four of them on track in Group 1 (with a fifth if you include the Honorary Volvo of the weekend – the 1800 Volvo powered Marcos G2 of Gary Madson that ran in Group 2 – Small Bore Historic). Jim Latham (Volvo 122S), Gil Stuart and Peter Valkenburg (PV 444 and PV 544 respectively), and Ralph Zbarsky (Volvo 142S – shaking down a new race car) all put in great drives. Dave Phillips (1957 Austin-Healey 100-6) is still racing the old school way – drive your car to the track, change tires, race and drive it back home. The rare 1960 Alfa Romeo Sprint Zagato of Laurie Frasier was a welcome addition to the group as well.

The Lotus 7 of Mark Brown was the fastest in Group 2 – Small Bore Historic, while the Mini’s of Geoff Tupholm and Mike Owens put on a great show. Datsuns were well represented with Paul Haym’s 510 the fastest of the three, with the 510 of Mark Finness and the 2000 roadster of Joe Deagle close behind.

Group 3 was the Large Bore Historic Group, and the technical nature of Mission Raceway was on display here. The BMW 2002’s of Ron Dempsey and Laurie Lyford, along with the 1969 Escort of John McCoy and the Cortina of Alan McColl were very quick through the backside of the course. But the Sunbeam Tiger’s of Roger Flescher and Doug Yip were faster on the long front straight. Fastest of all was the 1969 Mustang of Tom Cantrell, along with the 1969 Camaro of Paul Kuckein. The most photogenic car of the weekend, the Martini-liveried Porsche 911T of Ernie Yakimovich ran in this group, and was always in the top half of the field.

Group 4 – Open Wheel and Sports Racing Cars to through 1990 – was a bit of a mixed bag. Entries ran the gamut from Formula Vee up through the Rawlson CR11 Can-Am/ASR of Ian Wood. The different groups let the cars have their own battles with like machinery. Quickest among the Vee’s was Al Ores’ 1976 Caldwell D-13, while the 1970 Caldwell D9 of Charlie Lyford and the 1968 Lotus 51B of Andrew Morrison were among the quick cars in Formula Ford. Alan McColl was doing double duty with his 1977 Tiga FF (along with his Cortina in Group 3), but the fast times of the day for all groups were set by Ian Woods and his Rawlson.

All in all, the British Columbia Historics is a great, well-organized event. I’m looking forward to next year.

289 Cobras battle on racetrackWhat’s the biggest financial exposure that owners of valuable automobiles confront? Leaving aside a depressed sales market, a collision is the top risk followed by fire. There is a sea of difference between these two threats, however. A collision will bang up just one owned vehicle (at a time), but a fire can destroy or otherwise damage several cars in one fell swoop, assuming they’re all stored in the same place. Financially, the outcome can be devastating.

There are two basic fire risks—the “internal” and the “external,” I’ll call them. The former is a fire that is caused by something inside or connected to the vehicle, such as a battery charger that overheats or a fuel system that leaks and ignites. The latter is a premises fire that spreads.

There are number of great automobile collections around the world. I’m far from an expert on them, but the best of the best have to very good to be better than the collection and facility that Peter Mullin has put together in Oxnard, California.

Although the Mullin Museum is focused on great French coachwork and competition cars, it is much more than an automobile museum, with an extensive display of some of the furniture, sculpture and art of the Bugatti family. It is a celebration of the great industrial design and art movements of the early 20th century, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and the art of the Machine Age.

1934 Alfa Romeo P3 - Jon ShirleyAlong with fireworks and outdoor activities, the 4th of July weekend in Seattle means two things: The really nice weather starts the day AFTER the holiday, and the Pacific Northwest Historic Races. Now in it’s 22nd year, the Historics, held at Pacific Raceways in Kent, WA, has become the largest vintage car race in the Northwest. Starting in 1990, the Pacific Northwest Historics became a fund-raiser for Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center. Last year’s event had more than 255 entries, and raised almost a half-million dollars for Children’s Hospital. This year’s event had over 195 cars entered – down a bit from 2009 – but a quality group of vintage race cars, nonetheless.

The weather held up its end of the bargain – the rain was heavy enough to wash out Friday morning’s practice and qualifying sessions, canceling the Friday afternoon race sessions. (A few brave souls did make an effort to get some laps in, but the slick surface dampened the enthusiasm of most of the racers. No sense risking the car at the beginning of a three-day event). Qualifying was moved to later in the day after the lunch break. The sun made a welcome appearance, the track dried quickly, and the run for grid positions in the seven race groups started right away.

1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Comp on auction blockOkay, so I like alliteration, but that headline is no stretch at all in the case of the 2010 Monterey auctions. RM Auctions, Gooding & Company, Bonhams & Butterfields and Mecum Auctions reported a combined $164,231,617 in sales in nine selling sessions held over a span of just four days, a frantic Thursday-Sunday that set new records in almost every sense.

The record total is largely attributable to one simple fact: thirty-two cars brought successful hammer bids of a million dollars or more, total successful bids of $72,400,000, $83,417,000 with commission, just over half the week’s record total sale.

Jaguar E-Type at Goodwood Breakfast Club 2010The theme for the seventh Goodwood Breakfast Club of 2010 was “Classic Sunday”, featuring plenty of pre-1966 cars on display on the grid and in the Paddocks. Held 29 August 2010, it was the last Breakfast Club ahead of the Goodwood Revival, which takes place on 17-19 September 2010, and it provided the perfect opportunity to feel inspired by this bygone era and get into the period theme of the Revival.

Since it was introduced in March 2006, the free to enter, and open-to-all Breakfast Club – based at Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex – has become one of the country’s most popular motoring events, an admission-free monthly gathering of drivers and riders united by their petrol-head passion. Held on the first Sunday of each month from March to December (with the exception of July and September when the Festival of Speed and the Revival are held) the Breakfast Club offers desirable and cherished vehicles, an English breakfast, a Sunday morning drive and the camaraderie of fellow motoring enthusiasts.

And it was the classic Alfa Giulia GTAm that came top of the poll, beating the modern 8C Competizione supercar to the chequered flag with less than one percent more of the vote.

Royal Auto Club TT Celebration at Goodwood Revival 2009The Goodwood Revival 2010, to be held 17-19 September on the celebrated West Sussex motor circuit, is set to be a very special weekend, with mouth-watering grids, scintillating on-track action and a number of significant anniversaries to celebrate.

The 2010 edition of the Goodwood Revival is set to build on the success of last year’s event, when a record-breaking 134,000 people attended over the weekend. Due to this phenomenal popularity, spectator numbers are being more tightly controlled this year with the aim of keeping the event comfortable and not too crowded. More grandstand seats have been added too, as well as an enhanced pedestrian flow with an additional access tunnel into and out of the inner circuit paddock areas.

1971 Alfa Romeo T33/3 - Joe NastaciThe Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion 2010, held August 12-15 at the 2.238-mile, 11-turn Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, featured more than 600 vintage race cars grouped into 19 classes. Photographer Dennis Gray documented the racing action, offering a total of 275 images from the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion 2010 on top of 100 photos from the Monterey Pre-Reunion.

Even still, we often run into a problem when Gray is at the track – too many good images, especially on a huge race weekend like the 2010 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Given the massive field of historic race cars on track at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, we ended up with not enough time and/or room to post all of the images in our original stories. Therefore, in addition to our “Monterey Pre-Reunion” and more complete “Monterey Motorsports Reunion – Results and Photo Gallery”, we offer the following 115+ images that are too good to keep to ourselves.

In addition to on-track images from multiple turns and angles, the gallery includes several photographs of cars resting in the paddock, highlighted by detailed shots of the Vittorio Jano 1930 Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3, chassis # 5006, currently owned and competitively raced by Peter Giddings.

Arnolt-Bristol For SaleThe latest Classified Ads from the Past is a rare all-aluminum 1955 Arnolt-Bristol offered for sale in the pages of Road & Track in 1972 for $6,000.

The story of the Arnolt-Bristol is a short lived, but incredibly wild venture. The man behind the beautiful Arnolt-Bristol cars started out as a mechanical engineer in the Midwest United States before the second World War.  When the company he worked for in 1939 went under, Stanley Harold Arnolt purchased the patents for a small outboard marine engine for mere pennies, and in a few years transformed it into millions of dollars when the Navy needed such a motor for their small water craft during World War II.

1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Roadster - Tony DeLorenzo Mecum Auctions held its second annual Monterey sale on August 13-14, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa on the Del Monte Golf Course in California, resulting in total gross sales (excluding buyer’s premium) of $15.4 million. Combined with post-block sales that continue to occur in “The Bid Goes On” – Mecum’s program to market vehicles that don’t sell on the auction block – the company estimates final sales for the auction will be close to $20 million.

“While last year’s event was monumental because of our record-breaking $7.25 million sale of the 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe, this year’s event was hugely successful in its own right. In fact, if you take the Shelby out of the equation, we more than doubled our sales over last year,” said President Dana Mecum.

Report and photos by Brian Lynch

Mercedes-Benz 300SL RoadsterThe inaugural Legends of the Autobahn: West Coast Summer Concours was held Friday, August 13, 2010 at Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California.

In 2009, the BMW Car Club of America conducted it’s own concours as the highlight of their annual Festorics gathering during Monterey Car Week. For 2010, the BMW CCA invited the Porsche Club of America and the Mercedes-Benz Club of America to join the party. Over 200 cars from all three marques entered concours competition, while another 300 vehicles formed a giant car corral. By itself, the corral parking would have made a great show, featuring a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, a Mercedes 300SL Roadster and a Porsche 911RS (complete with a “yes it is real” sign on the dash) among many other outstanding cars.

On the concours field, members of the BMW club brought out their finest, including several rare pre-war cars from the collection of Jim Smith. The highlight of this collection was one of the two BMW Pillarless Coupe 327/28?s built in 1939. This car is the only one known to still exist. The president of the BMW Auto Club of Columbia (that’s Columbia, South America) been literally shopping around the world for a high quality 1600 GT. Fortunately, he located a great car in Napa just two days before the Legends event.

The Porsche club also showed up in force. The very first 930 Turbo imported into the U.S. in 1976 was on display, complete with a copy of the January 1976 issue of Road & Track magazine with the car on the cover. Also on the lawn was a two-owner 1959 356 with over 500,000 miles.

Although smaller in numbers, Mercedes-Benz was also well represented. In addition to the Gullwing and 300SL Roadster in the corral, a beautifully customized Gullwing received lots of attention. Another highlight was a 300 SEL with the Autobahn-cruising 6.3 liter engine.

Although it has a lot of competition from Concorso Italiano and the Quail Motorsports Gathering, the Legends of the Autobahn event is on the brink of exploding. High-ranking national officials from all three clubs were in attendance, and all were enthusiastic about 2011. Add in the rumor that the Audi Club of North America will join the fray, look forward to the Legends of the Autobahn event becoming another of the many “must see” events during Monterey Car Week.

Jonathan Feiber - 1930 Bugatti Type 35B.The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion 2010 vintage car race was held August 14th and 15th at the 2.238-mile, 11-turn Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. A field of more than 600 classic race cars took to the track, grouped into 19 different racing classifications.

Formerly known as the Monterey Historic Automobile Races or Monterey Historics, the “inaugural” Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is in fact the 37th time historic races have been held at Laguna Seca, although 2010 was the first year under new management.

This year, rather than naming a featured marque, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion 2010 honored Dan Gurney and the cars he built and drove. Gurney, inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1990, is an American icon who personifies an era in international motorsports when race cars were not just fast but extremely dangerous and the men who drove them were the stuff of legends.

Featured race groups at Monterey Motorsports Reunion 2010 are Formula 1, which is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its modern era and showcased cars from the FIA 3-litre Formula that ran from 1966-1983; Bugatti Grand Prix; Trans-Am cars from 1966-1972 and Stock Cars (with drum brakes) that competed between 1959 and 1975.

Graham Wallis of Cedar Glen, California was awarded the Spirit of Monterey Trophy for overall excellence in presentation and performance of his 1929 Lagonda, which raced in the group for Pre-1949 Sports and Racing Cars.

“This is the car we drive,” said Wallis. “We go shopping in it, we vacation in it, we go to the garden center and put plants in it, and four or five times a year we pump the tires up and we go racing. The car is absolutely all original; we’ve traced its history back to the 1930s and found that the body is all original–most of the leather is original, the engine and gear box are all original, and it’s all as it was when it came out of the factory,” said Wallis.

Dennis Gray was at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to document the 2010 edition of the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which saw weather conditions change nearly every hour. Fortunately this allowed Gray to take many pictures unique to this year, especially the images taken during the heavy fog conditions early in the morning.

Saturday Notes: Sir Stirling Moss was in the Group 1A field with his newly-purchased Porsche RS 61, although misfortune struck Moss on the warm-up lap during practice on Thursday. According to Moss, the Porsche stepped out a wheel onto the grass putting it off the track, albeit without coming into contact with the barriers. A second car, also on its warm-up lap, left the circuit and hit Moss’ RS 61. Sir Stirling was not injured, the car however suffered considerable damage, rendering it undriveable for the rest of the weekend.

John Morton in the 1958 Scarab.John Morton suffered a scary crash when his 1958 Scarab flipped end over end near after coming in contact with another car during the Group 3A race. Both were reacting to spinning cars ahead. Morton went by ambulance to the hospital, where he thankfully checked out fine. The Scarab was totaled, although its owner the Collier Collection reportedly had plans to reunite pieces of it with their original Scarab chassis.

Dan Gurney conducted a public interview and autograph session with fans who were also treated to a special display of Gurney Eagle Racing Cars: Formula 1, Indy cars, IMSA GTP prototypes, Can-Am and Trans-Am machines. “Being here at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is like a step back in time for me,” said Gurney. “It brings back all sorts of great memories.”

A dedicated grid of over 30 Bugattis competed in the Bugatti Grand Prix, with entries coming from as far away as Australia, France, Germany and Switzerland.

Bruce Canepa was doubly successful on Saturday, winning closely-fought battles in Group 5A, driving a Porsche 917K, and Group 7A, driving a Ford Mustang. Canepa’s combined margin of victory was a scant 1.48 seconds.

Fastest lap of the day went to Stephen Johansen, who turned a 1:24.79 on his way to victory in Group 9A driving a 1986 Porsche 962.

Monterey Motorsports Reunion 2010 – Sunday Results and Photo Gallery

Sunday Notes: Formula One celebrates its 60th year of the modern era in 2010, and to celebrate Historic Grand Prix brought 34 authentic F1 cars to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, including such manufacturers as Ferrari, Lotus, Brabham, McLaren, Shadow and Tyrrell.

Rob Walton's 1965 Cobra Daytona Coupe in turn 11.Herb Wetanson scored a double on Sunday, racking up wins in Group 2B, driving a 1951 Frasier Nash Le Mans, and in 4B with his Zagato-bodied Aston Martin DB4 GT.

Rob Walton won popular Group 7B driving his 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe, chassis number 2286. Dan Gurney and Jerry Grant piloted # 2286 at Le Mans in 1965, scoring a DNF with clutch failure at 15 hours after running as high as 3rd overall.

Not surprisingly, fastest time of the day and weekend went to a Formula One race car, as Charles Nearburg turned a blazing 1:22.72 with his 1981 Williams FW 07B. For reference, Nearburg’s time would have taken pole for the American Le Mans Series GT2 Class in 2009.

Pebble Beach Concours 2010 Best of Show - 1933 Delage D8S DeVillarsA 1933 Delage D8S De Villars Roadster owned by The Patterson Collection in Louisville, Kentucky, was named Best of Show at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance held Sunday, August 15th on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. Additionally, proceeds from raffles, auctions, sponsorships and ticket sales helped contribute more than $1 million to charity for the fifth consecutive year.

“There are so many things about this car that are special,” said owner Jim Patterson, who founded Long John Silver’s restaurant and contributed to the founding of the Rally’s Hamburger chain. “We’ve won (with other cars) at a lot of concours, but never here. This win at Pebble is the ultimate. This is the one win that really matters.”

Competitors from 33 states and 14 countries brought their prized automotive possessions to the California’s Monterey Peninsula for judging in 29 classes. In the end, the white, streamlined 1933 Delage with coachwork from De Villars was judged the best at the 60th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

“This Delage has a short wheelbase that makes it look more rakish, but it still has a long and elegant look,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “It did 110 miles-per-hour in its day; it could race and was stunningly beautiful. This car could do it all; it embodied style, speed and comfort.”

Delage added the sports version to the D8 range in 1930. To make the S more aerodynamic than its predecessors, a new radiator shell was used, which required a special hood and firewall that made the D8S even more visually distinctive. Patterson’s D8S graced the 1933 Salon de Paris at the Grand Palais. It was owned during the 1950s by the Grand Hotel Velasquez in Madrid, Spain and was used as transportation for its more discerning guests. Now it’s one of 60 Pebble Beach Concours Best of Show winners.

The 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance saw more than 250 cars and motorcycles on the show field, encompassing more than 100 years of the automobile, with the oldest car on the field being a 1902 Mercedes Simplex.

The Pebble Beach Concours occurs every year on the third Sunday in August. Featured marques for the 61st Pebble Beach Concours, slated for Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, will include Mercedes-Benz and 100 Years of the Automobile, Stutz Centennial, Ferrari 250 GTO and Italian Motorcycles.

Alfa Romeo at Pebble Beach Concours 2010The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2010 was held Sunday, August 15th at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California. More than 250 cars and motorcycles lined the 18th hole of Pebble Beach Golf Links for the 60th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, with a total of 29 classes in 2010 including feature and special classes.

Alfa Romeo, a featured marque at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, had the largest presence on the show field, including seven vehicles shipped from the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, Italy. The 75th anniversary of Jaguar was also featured, as was Pierce-Arrow. Special classes included a focus on the 50th anniversary of the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, the centennial of the Indianapolis 500, Hot Rod lakesters and Bonneville racers, American Prewar Road and Ghia-designed vehicles. Following the initial appearance of a motorcycle class last year, the 2010 class showcased Pre-war American road and racing motorcycles, including board-track racers.

The overall winner – Best of Show – was a 1933 Delage D8S Roadster with coachwork by DeVillars owned by the Patterson Collection. (See Delage D8S DeVillars Profile). Also nominated for Best of Show was the 1939 Delage D8 120 Henri Chapron Cabriolet of Daniel Sielecki, Sam and Emily Mann’s 1930 Duesenberg J Graber Cabriolet and the 1929 Bentley Speed Six Park Ward Open Two Seater of Arturo & Deborah Keller.
