Bruce’s Unfinished Business – McLaren M6-GT http://www.sportscardigest.com/mclaren-m6-gt-profile/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/mclaren-m6-gt-profile/#comments Mon, 21 Jul 2014 14:00:31 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=64879 History’s top racing car manufacturers have always taken rather different approaches to their road-going products. Enzo Ferrari never cared for them all that much, as fantastic as many of them were, seeing them as a way to fund the next race car. Ferdinand Porsche, on the other hand, placed great importance on his company’s street cars and there was often a strong link between Porsches for the road and Porsches for the track. In between Porsche and Ferrari there were dozens of smaller specialist car makers, and Great Britain in particular was a hotbed of racing activity in those formative decades after the Second World War.

A definite standout of this era would of course be McLaren, first incorporated as Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Limited in 1963. Young Grand Prix hotshoe Bruce McLaren had followed in his mentor Jack Brabham’s footsteps to start racing cars bearing his own name, and though the group had rather humble beginnings, in just a few years cars bearing Bruce’s name would steamroll the Can-Am series, win at Indy and establish McLaren as one of the Formula One superpowers.

Mecum Indianapolis 2014 – Auction Report http://www.sportscardigest.com/mecum-original-spring-classic-indianapolis-2014-auction-report/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/mecum-original-spring-classic-indianapolis-2014-auction-report/#comments Fri, 18 Jul 2014 15:00:59 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=66141 Mecum Auctions Spring Classic, State Fairgrounds, Indianapolis, Indiana, May 13-18, 2014

Report and photos by Rick Carey, Auction Editor

[First an apology to readers for the lateness of this report. May and June were two months of nearly continuous travel, with barely enough time to take a shower and get clean clothes between trips.

The following report – comprising almost 190 cars out of the 1,600 Mecum Indy consignment – needed some extensive editing after the fact, particularly since I was able to view and write up only about half of the cars reported here. Some of the third party reports also were delayed, putting Mecum's Spring Classic further behind.

As late turned to later I prioritized some subsequent auctions, like Mecum Seattle, ahead of finishing the Spring Classic, but finally was able to include all the cars eventually available.

Question for readers:
• Less comprehensive but more timely reports; or
• Include and edit for both style and completeness all the cars viewed, to the detriment of timing?

Comment below and we'll be guided accordingly, particularly for the upcoming multiple Monterey auctions.]

Mecum’s Spring Classic has evolved along with Mecum’s several years of expansion beyond its original Middle America core. It was expected to be the first auction to offer over 2,000 cars, but never quite got there, and now has been subsumed by the tsunami of consignments going to Kissimmee, Dallas and maybe even Harrisburg.

Ferrari was the featured marque at this year’s historic car race, which also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 2.65-mile, 15-turn road course in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec.

Additionally, the legendary Canadian-American Challenge Cup or Can-Am series produced a number of its most memorable contests on the circuit following its 1966 debut there, won by racing great John Surtees in a Lola T70.

The headline attraction for RM Auctions’ Pebble Beach Classic Car Week auction will comfortably achieve eight-figures when it crosses the podium in California next month.

The first of three 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciales, chassis 0670 was built by Ferrari for FIA homologation and factory development to compete at the highest levels in endurance racing. Each Berlinetta Competizione car was hand-built, and all three were fitted with super-lightweight aluminum bodywork and powered by a type 213/Comp dry-sump engine topped with six Weber carburetors, as first seen in the 250 LM. While one of its sibling cars, chassis 06885, illustrated the model’s dominance on the track, winning its class at Le Mans, 06701 was used as a road car from new.

The Plateau Six race — the most modern grid at Le Mans Classic 2014 — was held for race cars that left their mark on the 1972 to 1979 era of Le Mans. A notable entrant was the Alpine A442B that scored outright victory in the 1979 Le Mans 24 Hours with Didier Pironi and Jean-Pierre Jaussaud at the wheel – Renault’s only overall success in the Sarthe.

2014 Fiat 500 Sport – Driving Report http://www.sportscardigest.com/2014-fiat-500-sport-driving-report/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/2014-fiat-500-sport-driving-report/#comments Fri, 11 Jul 2014 14:00:12 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=65112 It’s easy to pick on the little guy, and Fiat’s 500 has endured plenty of this during its few years on this side of the Atlantic. Chosen as the mascot for the brand’s return to American soil, the ‘little’ Cinquecento was a brave move coming from a very new relationship between Fiat and the Chrysler group. Following a 27-year hiatus from the United States, the anticipation was high, and there was news of several new Italian flavored models that would soon be joining the lineup. It all sounded really good. Unfortunately, in 2014 we’re still only left with a few versions of that same 500, and a pseudo-500, minivan, they’ve affectionately named, the 500L. No tasty, small displacement sports cars, sporting sedans or even the brand’s much-loved Panda. With the Alfa Romeo US launch continuously being put off, one might wonder if enthusiasts will ever get the chance to enjoy the inexpensive, authentic Italian experience stateside.

It’s not all bad news, though. As it turns out, the car we all like to laugh at can really provide lots of smiles, and thankfully for us, is finally a high-quality object that is about the farthest thing from what was being sold when Fiat left this country with their tail between their legs.
