Pur Sang Argentina – An Introduction http://www.sportscardigest.com/pur-sang-argentina-introduction/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/pur-sang-argentina-introduction/#comments Wed, 30 Jul 2014 13:00:54 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=66643 Wind back the clock on your DeLorean to 1930 or so, eighty-plus years ago.

Your [great] grandparents might still have been dancing the Charleston.

It was the time of Machine Age design. Craftsmanship, dedication, style, design and ingenuity were its hallmarks.

It persists today at Pur Sang in Paraná, Entre Rios, Argentina. And it is not only in the meticulously crafted automobiles that are mirror images of Bugattis and 8C Alfa Romeos from the Twenties and Thirties, but also in the way they do it: without fuss or fanfare, without conceit and with a profound excitement and enjoyment in their products.

They love cars, and it shows in what Pur Sang Argentina creates as well as in their intense pride in themselves and their appreciation for driving them.

Maserati Parade at 2014 Silverstone Classic http://www.sportscardigest.com/maserati-parade-2014-silverstone-classic/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/maserati-parade-2014-silverstone-classic/#comments Wed, 30 Jul 2014 12:00:00 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=66884 The 100th Anniversary of Maserati was honored at the 2014 Silverstone Classic, held 25-27 July at the Silverstone Circuit in England. As the Silverstone Classic’s official Celebration Marque, Maserati celebrated its centenary in style with hundreds of cars taking part at the Northamptonshire circuit.

Racing legend Stirling Moss OBE led out the largest collection of Grand Prix cars ever assembled to mark the anniversary of the 50th Grand Prix held at Silverstone. In 1948 the first ever British GP was won by Luigi Villoresi driving a Maserati, so it was fitting that Moss lead out the parade having himself won two Grand Prix titles back in 1956 in the Maserati 250F.

Tinker Tailor Cayenne Macan – Road Realities http://www.sportscardigest.com/tinker-tailor-cayenne-macan/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/tinker-tailor-cayenne-macan/#respond Tue, 29 Jul 2014 14:00:15 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=65974 Tinker Tailor Cayenne Macan

By Lizett Bond

The 2015 Porsche Macan. My thoughts instantly turn to Matryoshka dolls. You know, those little Russian nesting dolls. They follow a theme, open one figure and another is revealed, and so forth. Russian fractals. The 1979 BBC series presentation of the John le Carre miniseries, “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”, introduces these dolls as a representation of Smiley’s quest to uncover the Circus mole.

So what is Porsche’s narrative motif? “Open the Cayenne and out pops the Macan?” But where does the Panamera fit in? And what follows? A 911?

With lineage like this, the Macan has to be more than just the next nesting Porsche.

Mecum Seattle 2014 – Auction Report http://www.sportscardigest.com/mecum-seattle-2014-auction-report/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/mecum-seattle-2014-auction-report/#comments Tue, 29 Jul 2014 13:00:46 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=66492 Mecum Auctions, CenturyLink Field Event Center, Seattle, Washington, June 13-14, 2014

Mecum Auctions is constantly refining its calendar, trying new places and dates, usually with success.

Frank Mecum said, “We looked at where we’re shipping cars, and a lot were heading to the Pacific Northwest so we thought this would be a good place to try an auction.” It turned out that they were right, with a good consignment of cars headlined by the locally-owned ‘Cuda Hemi convertible and Corvette L88 and a huge spectator turnout.

The numbers were not so good with a 51.2% sale rate on 305 of 596 cars sold. The total, at $15,113,131 including commission is credible and the mix of cars sold with an average transaction with commission of $49,551 and $27,000 median transaction (54.5% of the mean) was largely consistent despite the distortion of the $3,780,000 sale to a phone bidder of the ’71 ‘Cuda Hemi convertible.

Launched last year on the 110th anniversary of the infamous 1903 Paris-Madrid road race, this year’s three-day, 1,424km (885-mile) rally was judged a great success by participants, despite less than glorious weather.

The overall winner of the Charles Jarrott Trophy for the second successive year, in his 1938 Alfa Romeo 6C SS Torpedino, Alastair Caldwell was quick to praise the route and the road book, while many others complimented the event’s organisation and schedule.

Nestled in the Kettle Moraine region of Wisconsin, about an hour’s drive north of Milwaukee, Road America is one of the prettiest tracks in the United States. Postcard perfect weather greeted the nearly 450 entrants at this year’s vintage race, formerly known as the Kohler International Challenge or KIC.

Can-Am cars from 1965 through 1974 were a featured race at the 2014 Hawk at Road America with Brian Redman, and 27 of them showed up to race. Chris MacAllister’s 1971 McLaren M8F was the class of the field, handily winning over Lolas, McLarens, McKees and Genies. Craig Bennett in his 1974 Shadow DN4 could have challenged for the win, but mechanical problems prevented him from racing.
