The first mid-engine production Porsche, the 914 in all its variants, will be among the headline classes at the 20th annual Concours.

At first some Porsche purists lamented the Porsche 914’s seemingly humble origins. They whispered the “V-Word” – Volkswagen. The reality is that the 914 was a blood descendant of the seminal Gmund Porsche, the first car to wear the family name and the crest, a pure sports car designed around a Volkswagen-sourced air-cooled flat-four and a mid-engine configuration.

Gooding and Company Pebble Beach 2014 – Auction Report http://www.sportscardigest.com/gooding-company-pebble-beach-2014-auction-report/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/gooding-company-pebble-beach-2014-auction-report/#respond Tue, 16 Sep 2014 13:00:04 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=69129 Gooding & Company concluded its 2014 Pebble Beach auction with $106,004,800 in sales, concluding 107 of 121 lots, an 88.4% sell-through, in its two-day sale.

The total continued Gooding’s string of $100 million plus sales at Pebble Beach over the past three years. The sell-through was down 2.9 points, 3.2%, from last year’s extraordinary 91.3% sale rate. The average sale of $990,699 was up 2.6%, the median transaction of $319,000 was down 13.4% from 2013.

The numbers reflect Gooding’s failure rate at the high end, unusual for a Gooding auction. Twenty-three lots sold on hammer bids of a million dollars or more, but nine lots in excess of $1 million hammer were unsold. They totaled $56,350,000 in hammer bids that would have added $61,985,000 to Gooding’s total had they been concluded.

The Whitsun Trophy for sports-racing prototypes of a type that competed between 1961 and 1966 was the weekend’s fastest race and it provided breathtaking entertainment. Following last year’s spectacular one-make race to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ford GT40, the event returned to its regular format for 2014 with a huge variety of big-engined prototypes taking part. Legendary machines such as the Lola T70 and McLaren M1 in its various forms took on GT40s and other models that tackled the never-ending Mulsanne Straight at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Goodwood Revival 2014 – RAC Tourist Trophy Report and Photos http://www.sportscardigest.com/goodwood-revival-2014-rac-tourist-trophy-report-photos/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/goodwood-revival-2014-rac-tourist-trophy-report-photos/#respond Mon, 15 Sep 2014 17:00:02 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=69272 The Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy Celebration race at the Goodwood Revival 2014 was held Sunday, September 14th at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England.

The Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy Celebration, for closed-cockpit GT cars in the spirit of the RAC TT races of 1960-1964, is annually the most celebrated race at the Goodwood Revival. The one-hour, two-driver RAC TT Celebration 2014 featured a spectacular grid of super-rare GT cars racing in anger, driven by great pilots past and present. The grid once again offered a spectacular selection of internationally-renowned historic racing cars, including the Ferrari 250 GTO/64, 330 GTO and 250 GT SWB; Aston Martin DB4GT and Project cars; Jaguar E-types and E-Type Lightweights; Maserati Tipo 151; among others.

Formula 1 test driver Giedo van der Garde and David Hart provided the highlight of the final day of the 2014 Goodwood Revival as they took victory in a riveting RAC TT Celebration race in the latter’s monstrous 1963 AC Cobra. The pair fought off competition from £150 million worth of rivals, finishing ahead of the 1962 Maserati Tipo 151 of Joe Colasacco and Derek Hill and the 1961 Jaguar E-Type ‘Semi-Lightweight’ Spec of Matt Nicoll-Jones and Robin Liddell.

Similar to our 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 race photo galleries, Senior Photographer Tim Scott also documented the 2014 Goodwood Revival, including the following pictures from the headline RAC Tourist Trophy Celebration race. We split up Tim’s 265 pictures into two galleries. The first gallery starting below features our favorite images, all displayed in the full-width view of Sports Car Digest, while the second gallery and race results can be found on the last page of the article and gives a comprehensive view of all the photographs. Despite last-minute amendments to the fuel-saving Group C rules due to come into force in 1982, Stuttgart had a prototype 956 running on 27th March that year.

For a decade, the World Championship was to be a Porsche benefit, with either factory ‘Rothmans’ or privateer 956/962s winning round after round, including Le Mans seven times.

Over in the U.S., IMSA organiser John Bishop had a highly successful sprint series on his hands, with carefully balanced rules that equalised the performance of home-grown V8-powered Lolas and Marchs, Mustangs, Corvettes, Chevy Monzas and the inevitable turbo-Porsche 935s.

The average transaction at RM was $1.2 million, equivalent to an average hammer bid of nearly $1.1 million. The total dollars changing hands at RM alone was more than all the Monterey auctions combined managed in any year prior to 2010, even before the financial system buckled in 2008.

RM’s other accomplishment was putting the Ford GT40 Roadster Prototype, s/n GT/108, in the Monterey auctions’ Top Ten, a list that was otherwise all-Ferrari. Thirty cars sold at RM on hammer bids of $1 million or more; six of their nine misses were also bid to a million or more.

1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione Tour de France sold for £4,872,000 and 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Alloy made £1,960,000

The RM Auctions London 2014 sale was held 8th September at Battersea Evolution in London, resulting in £21,811,945 ($36,348,733 USD) in total sales and an 86.3% sell-through rate. Held in partnership with the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace, RM’s 8th annual London sale saw 80 cars – and one rocket – come to market in their last 2014 European sale.

The top result at the RM Auctions London 2014 auction went to the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione Tour de France, chassis 0563 GT, one of nine built by the Maranello factory. With extensive period racing history, including two top ten finishes in the Tour de France road race, the competition Ferrari attracted interest from bidders in the room and on the telephones, eventually selling for £4,872,000.
