Mecum Kissimmee 2014 – Auction Report http://www.sportscardigest.com/mecum-kissimmee-2014-auction-report/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/mecum-kissimmee-2014-auction-report/#comments Mon, 21 Apr 2014 14:00:27 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=61560 Mecum Auctions, Osceola Heritage Park, Kissimmee, Florida, January 17-26, 2014

By my count 2,743 vehicles, by far most of them automobiles, crossed the Mecum Auctions auction block in Kissimmee, Florida during its nine-day run January 17-26, 2014 (nine days since only ‘Road Art’ was offered on Monday.)

It is a sea of cars, under a blanket of tents scattered across the Osceola Heritage Park site. The schedule overlaps the final three days of auctions in Arizona so many simply got on a plane in Phoenix on Sunday and headed straight to Orlando. An average of just over 300 cars crossed the block in Kissimmee every day. Three hundred a day. At an [optimistic] average of 20/hour that’s fifteen hours a day moving a steady stream of lots across the block. In clock terms that’s 10AM to midnight, day after day.

CSRG Sonoma Season Opener 2014 – Report and Photos http://www.sportscardigest.com/csrg-sears-point-2014-report-photos/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/csrg-sears-point-2014-report-photos/#comments Mon, 21 Apr 2014 13:00:21 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=61107 The Classic Sports Racing Group (CSRG) kicked off its 47th season at Sonoma Raceway Sears Point in Sonoma, California on April 4-6, 2014. The event featured testing on Friday, with vintage racing on the 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course on Saturday and Sunday. Each race group competed in three races each over the two days for a total of 24 races over the course of the weekend.

The 2014 CSRG season opener was held in honor of David Love, a longtime Bay Area resident and CSRG’s co-founder, who passed away in 2013. Love was instrumental in the growth of the organization, which has contributed more than $600,000 to the Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities, the charitable arm of Sonoma Raceway, through its race weekends. He raced his Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa in over 250 events before retiring in 2009.

Despite heading further north for this year’s rally, it was a team from the south of the UK that went on to win the three-day, 600-mile event, after a ferocious battle for the lead.

Driver William Medcalf from Liss, West Sussex, and navigator David Kirkham from Ruislip, Middlesex, crossed the finish line at Gleneagles, north of Edinburgh, in their Bentley Super Sports to claim the win, with Paul Carter, the leader of Kent County Council, and John Bayliss in the Bentley Derby, less than a minute behind in second place.

Since 1992, the retrospective of the Tour de France Automobile race followed the French secondary roads along a handpicked itinerary. Renewed each year, the route for the 2014 Tour Auto Optic 2ooo was concentrated to the east of France. After the traditional start in the Grand Palais, in which the cars were displayed for Parisian enthusiasts, the rally followed a unique course that was a blend of closed country roads and racing tracks, before the race came to an end in Marseille.

The hotly-contested battle for first place in the overall Competition category was played out between the British crew of Shaun Lynn and Kevin Kivlochan in their AC Cobra and the E-Type Jaguar driven by French duo of Jean-Pierre Lajournade and Christophe Bouchet.

1956 Maserati 450S Prototype – Car Profile http://www.sportscardigest.com/1956-maserati-450s-prototype-profile-photos/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/1956-maserati-450s-prototype-profile-photos/#comments Mon, 14 Apr 2014 13:00:10 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=61091 In early 1956, Tony Parravano, a wealthy American housing developer, commissioned Maserati to build a new large-bore V-8 for use in a Kurtis Indy chassis. The order offered Maserati the chance to develop the V-8 project, coded Tipo 54, which had been shelved since the disastrous Le Mans accident of 1955. The project also provided a natural opportunity to try the new powerplant in Maserati’s own sports-racing chassis, of which the recently developed 350S was the most obvious candidate. This car, chassis number 3501, was elongated to accommodate the new V-8 engine, whose castings had been completed by May.

After its debut in practice as the prototype 450S at the Swedish Grand Prix in August 1956, this car, now identified as 4501, displayed great potential in acceleration and top speed; although, as it was still in the experimental phases, it was not properly sorted, and it proved unable to manage the V-8’s overwhelming power. Moreover, the wrong firing order produced intolerable vibrations, further hampering the car’s performance. Nevertheless, the 450S obtained the third best time in practice; even still, it was not entered in the race, but returned to Modena instead. A purpose-built 450S chassis was subsequently engineered.

Artcurial Paris Retromobile 2014 – Auction Report http://www.sportscardigest.com/artcurial-paris-retromobile-2014-auction-report/ http://www.sportscardigest.com/artcurial-paris-retromobile-2014-auction-report/#comments Thu, 10 Apr 2014 14:00:11 +0000 http://www.sportscardigest.com/?p=61113 Artcurial, Briest-Poulain-F. Tajan, Retromobile, Paris, February 7-8, 2014

The signature auction at Retromobile, February’s big car collecting show in Paris, has been traded around. From Christie’s to Bonhams to this year’s Artcurial, it arrived at its 2014 expression as a two-day auction of some 175 automobiles with diverse marques on Friday and a ‘Solo Alfa’ auction (of post-war cars) on Saturday.

Now, I have a self-admitted proclivity for the cars of Portello (and Arese). The ‘Solo Alfa’ sale contained examples never seen, nor probably heard about, in the States including diesels, turbos and the despicable Ondine, an Alfa-built Renault Dauphine. But there were GTAs, GTAms, Giulia and Giulietta Ti’s (apologies to my English teachers for that misplaced apostrophe but ‘Tis’ isn’t clear) that encompassed much of Alfa’s postwar history. Hard to resist? You bet!
