Istanbul Concours d’Elegance 2013 Information

The inaugural Istanbul Concours d’Elegance will be held 22-23 June 2013 at the Kucuksu Mansion in Istanbul. The first Concours in Turkey will draw upon the long history of Concours d’Elegance that started in the 1920s with horseless carriages gathering in the world’s top locations.

A total of 30 automobiles from the USA, Switzerland, UK, Greece, Italy, and Turkey will be competing in the 2013 Istanbul Concours d’Elegance in five categories.

Sensuous Steel Art Deco Exhibit Opening

In conjunction with the opening of Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, Tennessee will host a panel discussion with the exhibition’s Guest Curator, Ken Gross, and noted automotive authorities and collectors on Friday, June 14, 2013. Panel participants include Richard Adatto, automotive historian and exhibition catalogue contributor; Jeff Lane, president of Nashville’s Lane Motor Museum and exhibition lender; and Peter Mullin of the Mullin Automotive Museum and Foundation and exhibition lender.

Mille Miglia 2013 – Report and Photos

Italy in the spring and 420 classic cars making their journey around the country for a 1000 mile drive. It sounds almost like a fairy tale and perhaps this year it slightly was. In the days preceding the 2013 running of the Mille Miglia, the weather was nice and warm with clear blue skies, yet on Wednesday, when everybody arrived for technical scrutineering, the clear blue skies were replaced with some clouds. Yet, spirits remained high, because after all you are in Italy for the Mille Miglia and visiting with some of the world’s most stunning cars being checked before they go out for a long drive.

Avions Voisins Featured at 2013 Barrington Concours

The Barrington Concours d’Elegance 2013 will be held July 12-14 at the Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington, Illinois. The 7th annual event will feature a selection of classic French Avions Voisins on display for the first time in the Midwest, courtesy of the Mullin Automotive Museum.

“It’s an honor to host this extraordinary exhibit of Avions Voisins from the collection of Peter Mullin and the Mullin Automotive Museum,” said David Cooper, Concours Co-Chair and Chief Executive Officer.

Packard 745 Dual Cowl Phaeton sold for $198,000

The Auctions America Auburn Spring 2013 sale was held May 9-11 at the Auburn Auction Park in Auburn, Indiana, resulting in $5.7 million in total sales and 77 percent sell-through rate. Bidders hailed from seven countries and 38 states across the U.S., with nearly one-third of participants representing new clientele.

Top sale honors at the 2013 Auburn Spring event went to an AACA National First Prize-winning 1930 Packard 745 Dual Cowl Phaeton, presented in black with green leather interior and a black convertible top.

Mille Miglia 2013 – Results and Pictures

The Mille Miglia 2013 was held 16-19 May on the scenic roads of Italy. This year’s route traveled clockwise from Brescia to Rome and back, on the fabled Mille Miglia roads to cross through Vincenza, Ferrara, San Marino, Roma, Firenze, Siena, Maranello, among others.

Of the 415 crews that embarked on the 31st running of the retrospective Mille Miglia, 340 successfully returned to Viale Venezia in Brescia and the remaining 75 cars either withdrew from the race or dropped out.

Bonhams Greenwich 2013 – Auction Preview

The Bonhams Greenwich Auction 2013 will be held Sunday, June 2nd at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance in Connecticut. The sixth annual sale will see a strong selection of 100 motor cars offered for sale, including models from Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Bentley, Cadillac, Jaguar, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Rolls-Royce, among others.

Leading this consignments for the 2013 Bonhams Greenwich sale is a 1930 Bugatti Type 43 Supercharged 2/4 Seater.

The 2013 Bonhams auction of Aston Martin and Lagonda motor cars was held Saturday 18th May at Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell, UK, resulting in more than £10 million in total sales and an 100% sell-through rate. The 14th annual sale saw many lots achieve well above their high estimates.

The Bonhams sale set a new world auction record price for an Aston Martin in the marque’s centenary year

Mecum Auctions holds two sales each year in Kansas City, a reflection of several things, notably the supply of quality consignments in the region and a particularly good urban venue with abundant indoor display space (you could overhaul a couple of 747s in here after their wings were removed) and convenient downtown accommodations and amenities.

A little while ago Jack Reynolds commented on the Leake Oklahoma City auction report, “Patina seems to be the “in” thing at auctions these days. However, I don’t see any owners of muscle cars bragging about patina. Any thoughts?”

Quail Motorcycle Gathering 2013 – Report and Photos

The Quail Motorcycle Gathering 2013 was staged Saturday, May 4th at the Quail Lodge and Golf Club in Carmel, California. A crowd of more than 2,000 enthusiasts and collectors enjoyed the more than 230 motorcycles from the pre- and post-war era on display during the fifth annual event. The daylong celebration of motorcycle heritage also honored special guest and racing legend, Wayne Rainey, for his contributions to the community.

This year, the Quail Motorcycle Gathering added the Legends of the Sport series, a new element designed to commemorate one seminal motorcycle figure each year. In addition to being honored at this year’s Gathering, Rainey’s 1991 Yamaha YZR 500 v4 500cc, a gift given to him by Yamaha Factory, took home the Best of Show honors.

One-Off Ferrari Offered at 2013 Bonhams Quail Lodge

A Vignale-bodied 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Coupe will be among the headline offerings at the 2013 Bonhams Quail Lodge auction, scheduled for August 16th on the grounds of the Quail Lodge property in Carmel Valley, California.

This one-of-a-kind Ferrari was designed by Giovanni Michelotti for Vignale and sold new to the North American Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti. Upon seeing the design, Chinetti made it one of the headlines of the Ferrari display at the January 1954 New York Auto Show at Madison Square Garden.

RM Auctions Concorso Villa d’Este 2013 – Auction Preview

The RM Auctions Villa d’Este 2013 sale will be held 25th May at Villa Erba on the shores of Lake Como, Italy, as part of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este weekend.

The international team at RM Auctions assembled 40 vehicles for the biennial Villa Erba sale, headlined by the 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione; 1905 FIAT 60HP Five-Passenger Touring; 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Coupe Aerodinamico; 1930 Bugatti Type 46 Coupe Superprofilee; 1933 MG K3 Magnette; 1947 Cisitalia 202 MM Nuvolari Spider and 1927 Bugatti Type 37 Grand Prix; among the long list of impressive offerings.

Mission 2014 – Porsche Returns to Le Mans

In 2014, Porsche will return to the pinnacle of endurance motor racing, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a newly designed sports prototype. With 16 overall victories, Porsche is the most successful manufacturer in Le Mans. The most recent win was in 1998 with the Porsche 911 GT1.

The German manufacturer will mark the comeback with a multimedia website entitled “Mission 2014. Our Return.” The site will take fans on an interactive journey through 60 years of Porsche Motorsport history showcasing previously unreleased films, photo galleries and stories.

The Hawk at Road America 2013 – Race Preview

The 2013 running of the Hawk at Road America with Brian Redman will be staged July 18-21 at the famed 4-mile, 14-turn Road America road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

A mid-summer favorite, the event is one of the largest vintage car racing gatherings in the United States and features over 50 classes of cars racing in several groups. The four-day weekend will also showcase a historic Can-Am race, F5000 race, historic Formula 1 race and Chevrolet’s Corvette as the featured marque; which is a highlight of this year’s event as an impressive field of cars are expected to gather in celebration of Corvette’s 60th anniversary.

The middle of May always stands for the Mille Miglia, yet in 2013 there was a small surprise waiting. Held in honour of Aymo Maggi, the creator of the Mille Miglia, there was for the first time a Concorso d’Eleganza held out the outskirts of Brescia.

Located in an old palazzo that used to belong to the Maggi family and now houses a vineyard, the entries to the Lo Stile “The Style” Mille Miglia were limited only to actual Mille Miglia participants for this year’s rally.
