George Follmer Named Grand Marshal at VIR Gold Cup

George Follmer close-upVIRginia International Raceway named George Follmer as Grand Marshal of the Heacock Classic SVRA Gold Cup Historic Races scheduled for June 4-6, 2010. Considered to be one of the most versatile racers ever to sit behind a wheel, Follmer won championships in the Can-Am, SCCA and Trans Am series in the sixties and seventies. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1999.

“George Follmer is one of the very few men that raced successfully in Formula One, IMSA, Indy Cars, NASCAR, SCCA, Trans-Am and the World Endurance Championship series,” said Josh Lief, General Manager of VIR. “He’s been a consummate professional and is still regarded as a “driver’s driver” by many professional and sportsman racers today.”

“VIRginia International Raceway is the most beautiful race course I ever drove,” Follmer said upon the announcement of his visit. “I am greatly looking forward to returning there to see how the facility has developed into America’s Motorsport Resort.”

As Grand Marshal of the annual Heacock Classic SVRA Gold Cup, Follmer will be a welcome additional to what is already one of the most popular vintage race and car show events in the mid-Atlantic. In conjunction with the show, fans will also get to enjoy the OPTIMA Batteries Sprint and Mike Stott/UBS Financial Enduro series races. With vintage race cars dueling on the VIR 3.27 mile circuit, the addition of legendary driver George Follmer as the Grand Marshall will make this a most memorable event.
