The Forest Rally Stage at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed was held July 11-14 on a course designed by Hannu Mikkola in the forest on the hillside above Goodwood House. While the hill climb is the main attraction at the Festival, the Forest Rally Stage offered spectators the rare chance to see both historic and contemporary rally cars carving their way through the challenging tree-lined stage.
This year the Goodwood Forest Rally Stage was reinvigorated, with a revised paddock layout and redesigned stage start and finish, which saw cars driving at speed across the open areas on either side of the paddock. This, along with widened and resurfaced pedestrian footpaths and a new footbridge, which have been introduced in recent years, provided spectators with a much enhanced overall viewing experience.
Forest Rally Stage presenter Skoda put its latest creation, the Fabia S2000, through its paces alongside 2013 World Rally Championship entries from the likes of Citroen, Toyota, Ford and Volkswagen. Fresh from its record Pikes Peak triumph — and a magnet for Festival attendees — was the awesome Peugeot 208 T16. Equally bonkers were the 1980’s Group B weapons such as the MG Metro 6R4, Audi Quattro and Ford RS200.
Other Festival rally favourites in 2013 were the flat-six throb from the Porsche 911s, giant beating Mini Coopers, tail-happy Ford Escorts and the Saab 96 which produced a distinct two-stroke soundtrack that echoed throughout the stage. Adding to the excitement has been some serious driving talent, as the 2013 event was graced with the skills from none other than Carlos Sainz, Russell Brookes and Jean Ragnotti.
