The 50th Anniversary of the Porsche 911 was celebrated at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed, held July 11-14 at the Goodwood Hill Climb in England.

For five decades, the Porsche 911 has been at the heart of the Porsche brand, and at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the iconic sports coupe took center stage. Soaring more than 110 feet into the sky, the ‘Central Feature’ sculpture, the tallest in the history of the Festival of Speed, celebrated 50 years of the Porsche 911.From its base in front of Goodwood House, three futuristic white, steel ‘arrows’ raced upwards, each with an example of the 911 at its apex. The origins of the 911 were honored with an early Golf Blue coupe from 1965, the motorsport record of the model was highlighted by a Yellow 2.7 RS from 1973, and the latest all-wheel drive ‘Type 991’ Carrera 4 underlined the usability of the sports car from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.

To date, the Porsche 911 has featured at every single Goodwood Festival, from the first event in 1993 to the more than 185,000 visitors that attended the world’s greatest celebration of car culture this year. This year, a dedicated class of road and racing 911s, covering all seven generations of the iconic sports car, made runs up the 1.16-mile Goodwood hill climb twice each day for a special parade.

Porsche Museum sent an original 911 to Goodwood. As part of the ‘Follow the 911’ world tour, this 1967 car has been engaged as a rolling ambassador for Porsche at various international events, trade fairs, historic rallies and racing events, with visits in France, China, California and Australia during the year. The Museum also brought two examples of the rallying 911 – an SC ‘Safari’ and ‘Paris Dakar’ Carrera 4×4 – and two race cars, a ‘Type 964’ 911 RS from the 1993 Porsche Supercup Championship and ‘Type 996’ 911 GT3 RSR from the 2003 American Le Mans Series. Another highlight was the 1973 911 RSR 2.8, which won overall at the Sebring 12 Hours that year and effectively established the reputation of the Porsche coupe as a serious race car in America.

Joining this selection of 911 icons was an incredible line-up of historic Le Mans veterans, also from the Porsche Museum collection based in Stuttgart, Germany. The 1998 911 GT1 and the 935/78 ‘Moby Dick’ have been rarely seen in the UK, while in contrast the 1987 962 is a frequent visitor to the Earl of March’s West Sussex Estate. The 936 Spyder also traveled to Goodwood; with three victories at Le Mans, it is among the most successful Porsche race cars.

In addition, former Porsche factory race drivers Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood were once more reunited behind the wheel of the legendary Porsche 917 KH, with its Le Mans starting number 23. In 1970, seventeen examples of the 917 participated at Le Mans and, after 24 hours of racing in rain and fog, Porsche secured its first victory in the French endurance event. Behind the wheel of the distinctive red and white liveried car entered by Porsche Salzburg were Herrmann and Attwood. Porsche has achieved a record total of 16 overall Le Mans victories to date.
