Goodwood Revival 2010 – Sussex Trophy Results and Photos

Lister Chevrolet Knobbly - Jamie McIntyreIn Goodwood’s heyday, the Sussex Trophy catered for production sports-racing cars from the great marques such as Jaguar, Ferrari and Aston Martin. In addition to this, in 1958 and 1959, Goodwood spectators were treated to one of the greatest motor racing shows of the era when the RAC Tourist Trophy, a scoring event in the World Sportscar Championship, descended on West Sussex. It’s the spirit of these races that the Sussex Trophy revives today.

Jamie McIntyre brought the 2010 Goodwood Revival to a close with a dominant win in the Sussex Trophy. But while the Scot scampered off into the distance aboard his Lister-Chevy ‘Knobbly’, a real cat and mouse battle developed between the chasing Aston Martin DBR1 of Bobby Verdon-Roe, the Lister-Jaguar of Gary Pearson and Tom Kristensen’s Ferrari 246S Dino.

Verdon-Roe was quickest off the line but he was demoted to second by McIntyre two corners in, Pearson swarming all over his tail for the entire duration. But most impressive of all was Kristensen who seemed intent on using all parts of the track as potential overtaking spots, not least against early challenger Julian Majzub.

The Sadler racer was nonplussed by the Dane’s manoeuvre at the kink before St Mary’s on the fourth lap, the tyre dealer taking to the grass and waving his fist in frustration. The Le Mans superstar worked his way onto the back of third place man Pearson who was similarly glued to the tail of Verdon-Roe at half-distance. Majzub recovered to finish a fighting fifth. The positions would remain the same to the chequer in what was a thrilling denouement to an epic Revival meeting.

“I did too much of a burnout at the start,” said the winner. “I let the Aston get ahead for a few metres but Chevy grunt paid off. Among the backmarkers I had had keep myself cautious and careful and get the car home.”
