The Brooklands Trophy race at the 2012 Goodwood Revival was held Sunday, September 16th at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England.

The 2012 Goodwood Revival saw the return of the Brooklands Trophy for the first time since 2009. A grid of classic sports racers from the 1930s, like those that competed at the classic Surrey venue, included marques such as Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Frazer Nash, Invicta, Mercedes, MG, Riley and Talbot.

Max Werner emerged victorious in the 2012 Brooklands Trophy race for pre-war sports cars. The German historics regular was on determined form aboard his father Klaus’ 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza, but Talbot AV105 pilot Gareth Burnett kept him honest all the way to the flag. There was barely a car’s length between them following twenty thrilling minutes of wheel-to-wheel racing.

Werner lost out at the start, his front row grid position being nullified following a brush with Alain de Cadanet’s Invicta S-type in the run to the first corner. Patrick Blakeney-Edwards bolted out of the blocks from the second row aboard his Frazer Nash ‘saloon’ to lead for half a lap, before Burnett blasted past on the Lavant straight.

By quarter-distance, Werner was out in front, with Burnett inches behind. Blakeney-Edwards, who briefly tussled with Richard Pilkington’s Talbot-Lago T26SS over third place, broke free but dropped back from the lead battle. After eight laps, Burnett briefly nosed ahead past the pits but lost out in traffic which allowed the Alfa ahead. Werner survived a lurid grassy moment at St Mary’s on the final lap to win. Burnett had an off of his own exiting the chicane for the final time but recovered to finish a fighting second.

Senior Photographer Tim Scott documented the 2012 Goodwood Revival, including the following pictures from the Brooklands Trophy race for sports cars in the spirit of the great Brooklands endurance races prior to 1939. To see more from Tim, visit fluidimages.co.uk.
