The Richmond and Gordon Trophy race at the 2012 Goodwood Revival was held Sunday, September 16th at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England.

The Richmond and Gordon Trophy race at the 2012 Goodwood Revival featured cars from one of Grand Prix racing’s golden eras, when the Cooper-led rear-engined revolution changed the face of the sport. This year’s race saw front-engined Maserati 250F, Ferrari 246 Dino, Lancia D50, Aston Martin DBR4 and BRM Type 25 battling against rear-engined BRM P48, Cooper T43, 45, 51 and 53, and Lotus 18.

British GT regular Alasdair McCaig won a dramatic Richmond and Gordon Trophies encounter for Formula One and Inter-Continental Formula cars aboard his father Hugh’s Cooper T53. The initial race start was blighted by a pile-up triggered by Gary Pearson’s stricken BRM P25. The resulting melee saw several cars eliminated but fortunately without injury to their pilots. Once racing resumed, McCaig lead from the off, with historics veteran Rod Jolley glued to his tail aboard his Cooper T45/51 with Pearson close behind.

However, by half-distance it was a two-car race with Jolley rocketing up behind his rival on the straights, only to lose out on the corners. However, despite threatening to nose ahead, his challenges were rebuffed although Jolley recorded the fastest lap of the race on his final tour. Pearson finished third.

After the race, McCaig said, “I had to work hard for that one. Rod knows all the tricks, that’s for sure. What a great race.”

Similar to our 2011 Richmond Trophy and 2010 Richmond Trophy coverage, Senior Photographer Tim Scott also documented the 2012 Goodwood Revival, including the following pictures from the Richmond and Gordon Trophy race for Inter-Continental Formula and Formula One cars of a type that raced between 1954 and 1961.
