The competitive element of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, scheduled for 29 June to 1 July, is set to move up a gear in 2012 as more exciting cars and drivers than ever before aim to compete in the timed shoot out. Running against the clock, timed cars will tackle the tough Goodwood 1.16-mile hillclimb with gusto in their quest to be awarded the coveted ‘Fastest Time of the Day’ trophy. A vast and varied range of cars covering most major motor sport disciplines will run against the clock.

As an example to whet the appetite, many of the mouth-watering collection of Group C cars that Goodwood will be gathering to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this exciting race series will run up the Hill timed. On Festival Saturday (30 June) these Group C greats will be joined by other competition cars in a series of timed qualification runs, the aim being to qualify for the prestigious and hugely exciting Top 20 shoot-out on the Sunday afternoon (1 July). This will ultimately determine the ‘Fastest Time of the Day’, and therefore the victor of the 2012 Goodwod Festival of Speed weekend.

Group C cars expected to compete in the Top 20 shoot-out include the ex-Mark Blundell 1990 Le Mans pole winning Nissan R90CK, previous ‘Fastest Time of the Day’ victor Justin Law in his Jaguar XJR8/9LM, a Sauber Mercedes C9, a stunning Peugeot 905 and the Spice SE90C that was piloted by an all-female team in the 1990 Le Mans 24hr race.

Joining the Group C racers will be an intriguing array of other timed motor sport greats as diverse as a Lotus F1 car, Ferrari’s only 7-litre – the fearsomely fast 712 Can-Am racer – a Lola T70 10, the famous Bastos Rover SD1 touring car and the extreme Thundersport Vauxhall Carlton. The radical six-wheeled March 2-4-0 is set to make its Festival debut too, also competing against the clock on the Hill. It promises to be one of the most memorable sights of the 2012 Festival of Speed, and is not to be missed.
