Heacock Classic Gold Cup at VIR 2010 – Report and Photo Gallery

Chevron B16 - VIR Gold CupThe Heacock Classic SVRA Gold Cup Historic Races were held June 4-6, 2010 at the historic 3.27 mile Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in Alton, Virginia, with hundreds of classic race and collectible cars on both the track and in the car show.

This year’s SVRA Gold Cup honored Motorsports Hall of Fame member George Follmer as Grand Marshal. In addition to the car show and regular race activities, fans enjoyed the OPTIMA Batteries Sprint and Mike Stott/UBS Financial Enduro series races, as well as a special Elva/Lotus Challenge race, IMSA RS/2.5L Challenge Sedans event and the 3rd Annual Ryan Handy Memorial One Lap.

Photographer Al Wolford was at VIR to document this year’s Heacock Classic Gold Cup. Wolford reported that VIR was, as always, immaculately manicured everywhere. As in the case in recent years, the race weekend was so hot that few people lined the fences expect for those with canopies. The crowd looked like it might be a little smaller than last year; but that might just be a matter of people being back from the fences and more out of sight.

There was a good field of cars – about half ones were there last year with the other being different. There were enough cars in each group to keep everyone’s interest as they became spread out during the practice, qualifying and racing. There were also enough cars in each group that nearly every session had competitive racing between at least some of the cars, particularly the sports racers and the small bore formula cars.

Wolford’s favorites were all from the Lotus/Elva Challenge group and those were the 1961 Cooper Monaco Ferrari, the 1957 Elva II and the 1961 Elva VI. It is great to see cars from the racing era where sanctioning bodies had not made rules, allegedly to even competition, to the point where every car today looks the same expect for the paint scheme.
