1969 Dodge Hemi Daytona

The Mecum Kissimmee 2015 auction will be held January 16-25 at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida. The ten-day Kissimmee sale will see more than 3,000 vehicles and hundreds of automotive memorabilia items cross the block in Florida at the world’s largest collector car auction.

The Wellborn Muscle Car Museum Collection will be among the offerings at the Mecum Kissimmee 2015 auction.Nearly half of Tim Wellborn’s muscle car collection will cross the block in Florida, headlined by the 1969 Dodge Hemi Daytona (Est. $800,000 – $1,000,000) that’s the lowest-mile original engine 4-speed Hemi Daytona documented to exist. Formerly part of the Otis Chandler Collection, the Daytona was displayed at Amelia Island in 2006 and St. John’s in 2014.

Mecum Auctions’ President and Founder Dana Mecum said, “We’ve undoubtedly had some truly amazing collections cross our block through the years, but this group probably tops all of them. Kissimmee will bring with it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for buyers looking to acquire these extremely rare and highly sought-after muscle cars.”

Wellborn’s 1971 Dodge Hemi Charger RT, formerly owned by Mopar collector Steve Segal and NFL Linebacker Kevin Greene, is one of 63 built in the model’s final year of production with the Hemi engine and also one of very few equipped with the rare code-M51 power sunroof option (Est. $450,000 – $550,000).

The 1969 Dodge Hemi Charger 500 (Est. $125,000 – $175,000) is most highly optioned Charger 500 known to exist. This 44,175 original example has been part of the Wellborn Collection since 2004.

The 1971 Dodge Hemi Super Bee was the test car for the December 1970 Motor Trend cover story and was also featured in the April 1971 issue of Popular Hot Rodding (Est. $175,000 – $225,000). The original owner read the Motor Trend article then went to Swift Dodge in Sacramento and told them he wanted the actual car in the magazine. After several months of follow up, Chrysler agreed to sell the PR car.

While Hemi-powered machines are a predominant theme, the Wellborn Muscle Car Museum Collection also features many other examples including:

  • 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback, Unrestored and highly documented example with 4,770 original miles (Est. $450,000 – $550,000)
  • 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle LS6, Unrestored Triple Black LS6, original build sheet, warranty transfer from 1972, Protect-O-Plate and owner’s manual, 33,610 original miles (Est. $125,000 – $175,000)

Beyond the Wellborn Collection, the line-up at the Mecum Auctions Kissimmee 2015 sale offers everything from muscle cars to 1950s-era cars as well as vintage racers, European sports and exotics and a great selection of Corvettes.

The 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (Est. $725,000 – $850,000) on offer was Mickey Thompson’s personal ZO6. Previously known to be “The Sears/Allstate Tire Test Car”, the Corvette was also used as the advertising model for Mickey Thompson mag wheels. Also crossing the block will be a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette Tanker Coupe that’s one of two documented examples equipped similarly to a 1963 Z06. This Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame inductee and Special Collection participant was stored in a hand built plywood crate by the previous owner for 17 years (Est. $400,000 – $500,000).

The 1965 Shelby GT350 on offer at Mecum’s 2015 Kissimmee sale is one of the earliest production street-spec cars built, one of very few two digit serial number Shelby GT350 Fastbacks known to exist. The car resided in southern California for its first 40 years, passing through a chain of owners including Reggie Jackson (Est. $400,000 – $500,000).

The one-owner, unrestored and original 1971 Challenger Hemi R/T with 1,871 miles is well documented and accompanied with the original window sticker, order sheet, consumer information sheet, loan agreement, owner’s manual, payment checks to Hendryx Motor Company, Scat Pack Club and Dodge Owners Club ID cards as well as copies of the broadcast sheet, MSO and title application (Est. $450,000 – $550,000).
