Chevrolet Corvette Vintage Racer

Russo and Steele Monterey 2011 – Corvette Featured

A Chevrolet Corvette historic race car will be one of the featured offerings when Russo and Steele holds its 11th Annual Sports and Muscle at the Marriott Monterey auction event, scheduled for August 18-20, 2011.

This 1967 Chevrolet Corvette historic racer started life as a brand new 427/435 HP Coupe. Its owner at that time, Dr. Bill Green of California, immediately converted it to an SCCA A/Production racer. At which point, Dr. Green partnered up with Greg Pickett of Pickett Racing to form the Pickett Racing Team.

Having raced at some of the most famous tracks in the country like Riverside, Brainerd, Ontario, Laguna Seca, Phoenix Intl. and Sears Point, this 1967 427 Chevrolet Corvette raced in groups such as the Trans-Am, IMSA, SCCA; including historic groups such as the HMSA, SVRA, VARA, and HSR West from 1967 to 2007. In 1978 this Corvette, serial #194377S104044, won the last SCCA Regions A Production Championship at Sears Point; gaining a spot in racing history as “The Last A Production Champion.” It was one of the few mid-year Corvette racers to be successful in competing against the newer race cars of the era in the 1970’s.

Greg Pickett’s racing career spanned over four decades; earning his recognition with his 1967 A/Sedan Camaro. Mr. Pickett went on to racing fame winning a number of championships in a variety of different cars; he was Champion of the 1978 Trans-Am season in a Corvette and he’s the only driver in Trans Am history to win a race in each of those decades.

This historic Corvette racer was restored back to its original 1967-1975 racing livery in 2002. It was treated to a complete and comprehensive body-off restoration with no expense spared. The Corvette is powered by a 427cid big block producing 650hp at 6800 rpm; weighing 3200lbs it is also one of the fastest A/Production Corvette racers with a top speed of 170 mph. Recently, it has competed at the Portland Historic with HMSA, California Speedway with VARA, and the Phoenix International Speedway where it set the track record in the Big Bore race at 1.07.3. In 2010 it was invited to race at the Rolex Monterey Historic at Laguna Seca Raceway in California.

In addition to the Corvette, the Russo and Steele Monterey 2011 auction event will present a variety of competition ready automobiles at its 11th Annual Sports and Muscle at the Marriott auction event in August; located in the heart of downtown Monterey, CA. The three evening auction will offer over 250 European sports, American muscle, hot rods and custom automobiles.
