Silverstone Classic Results and Pictures – Saturday

The 2009 Silverstone Classic was held July 24-26 at the Silverstone Circuit in England. Saturday action saw a packed program of racing in perfect weather saw historic racing fans trackside right through to the evening Denny Hulme Trophy Race for World Sports Car Masters, preceded by a VIP grid walkabout.

The Daily Express Trophy Race for Production Jaguar Cars concluded with a prize presentation to first-placed XK120 driver Darren McWhirter by Pat Quinn, daughter of Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons.

Saturday races at the 2009 Silverstone Classic saw fierce on-track competition and provided thrilling spectating, including:

The superb grid entry for the RAC Woodcote Trophy was fully represented in the winners’ line-up, with the Jaguar D-Type of Gavin Pickering and Spencer Marsh eventually taking first place from the Maserati 250SI of Belgian Marc Devis.

Tony Dron and Benjamin Eastick took third place and the fastest lap in their Jaguar D-Type while two Ferrari 750 Monzas, a Lotus 10, Aston Martin DB3S and Allard J2X took the next five places.

Sir Stirling Moss fielded his Osca FS 372, waving through the larger cars in other classes, but sadly had to retire on lap 14.

The Jack Brabham Trophy for Pre-1966 Grand Prix Cars

The first of the two 20-minute HGPCA pre-’66 races saw race leaders Enrico Spaggiari in his Cooper T53 locked in battle with Roger Wills in his Cooper T51.

‘Russian Roger’ Wills and Spaggiari diced for first and second, while just behind them Ian Ashley in his LDS Alfa Romeo held off Nick Wigley’s Cooper T51 for an eventual second and third place respectively, but not before Wigley provided a serious challenge to Ashley’s podium position.

Wheel slides and nose to nose action provided thrilling action throughout the field, with less than a second between the overall top four.

The Jochen Mass Trophy for Group C Cars

The mighty Group C grid ran for 33 laps, with a battle between the eventual winning Jaguar XJR 9 and XJR 11 of Chris Buncombe and Gary Pearson respectively, followed by the third-placed Nissan R90C of Andy Purdie and the Jaguar XJR 12D of Justin Law and Andy Wallace in fourth.
