Gooding and Company Scottsdale 2012 – Auction Report

Since coming to Arizona in 2008 Gooding & Company has established itself at the core of the Arizona collector car auction experience, bringing outstanding cars and a refreshing upscale environment.

2012 continued that record, recording the Arizona auctions’ highest sale, the credibility-defying $4.6 million sale of alloy Gullwing s/n 1980435500208, the second-highest total sale value in this year’s Valley of the Sun extravaganza and leaving only two of the 118 cars to return to their consignors, a brilliant sale rate of 98.3%.

Top Ten Cars Sold at Auction as of February 2012

With the 2012 Arizona Auction Week and Paris sales behind us, we thought it was a good time to update the ranking of the Top 10 prices paid for cars sold at auction.

While there were no new entries from the Arizona or Paris auctions, there were three new cars since our last update, the new world-record 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Prototype that sold for $16,390,000, the 1931 Duesenberg Model J Whittell Coupe that brought $10,340,000 and the $9,680,000 paid for the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster.

RM Auctions Arizona 2012 – Auction Report

This year marked RM’s “Lucky Thirteenth” Arizona auction, held January 19-20, 2012 at the posh Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa. Growing from $6.3 million in 2000 to consistent totals in medium eight figures, RM’s $25,660,400 sale in 2012 marked the Arizona auction’s fifth year with greater than $20 million in sales.

RM got shuffled around some this year, moving into a ballroom in the main Biltmore hotel from the convention center which was booked to an oil company’s North and South American sales meeting. The new room was inconvenient for bringing cars onto the block, and cramped for bidders and onlookers. A return to the Convention Center next year would be a positive development.

Porsche Collection Offered at Gooding Amelia Island 2012

The Porsche Collection of Matt Drendel will be offered at the 2012 Gooding and Company Amelia Island Auction, scheduled for Friday, March 9th in Amelia Island, Florida.

The Drendel Family Collection consists of both road and race cars spanning 25 years of Porsche history from 1973 – 1997, with 10 of the 18 lots being offered without reserve. In addition, Gooding Amelia Island 2012 sale marks the first time many of these historically-important racing stars will have ever been presented at auction.

Artcurial Retromobile 2012 – Auction Results

The Artcurial Motorcars Retromobile auction was held Friday 3rd February 2012 at the Retromobile Show in Paris, resulting in €14.5 million in total sales and a 90% sell-through rate. The total sales figure was the highest ever for a collector car auction staged in France.

Artcurial assembled a strong collection of approximately 100 automobiles for their 2012 Retromobile auction, with a drive-through sale that lasted more than five hours in front of a crowd of around 1,000 people.

Bonhams Paris Sale 2012 – Auction Results

Bonhams held its flagship Paris auction on Thursday 2 February 2012 at La Halle Freyssinet in Paris, resulting in total sales of €7,198,038 and a 62% sell-through rate.

Bonhams offered over 100 cars and 35 motorcycles, including three private collections, with top sale going to the 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT Coupe that sold for €1,012,000.

Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2012 – Auction Report

Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale event was so different from years ago it’s difficult to put it in perspective.

B-J was once a collector car auction with a big party.

Today it’s a bigger party, built around a collector car and affluent lifestyle trade show, custom/collector car auction and multi-day automobilia auction, almost in that order.

Even year-to-year Barrett-Jackson evolves noticeably with its management team’s perception of enthusiasts’ – it’s hard to characterize the B-J clientele as “collectors” – interests.

Mecum Kissimmee 2012 – Auction Results

Mecum Auctions held its 2012 Kissimmee Auction on January 24-29 at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, resulting in total sales of nearly $60,000,000 and a 73% sell-through rate.

The Florida auction kicked off Mecum’s 25th year and a staggering 2,158 vehicles crossed the block, the most in company history. The six-day event achieved a 30% increase in attendance over last year.

Russo and Steele Scottsdale 2012 – Auction Results

Russo and Steele staged its 12th annual Sports and Muscle in Scottsdale auction on January 18-22, 2012 in Arizona, resulting in more than $20 million in sales and a 71% sell-through rate.

Russo and Steele offered more than 700 cars over five days in Arizona, with the top sale going to the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L-88 Roadster that sold for a world-record $687,500.

Arizona Auction Week 2012 – Summary Report

Barrett-Jackson sold this low-mileage, steel-bodied Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing for $2.2 million

Once the spiritual home of the Muscle Car, clones, “Resto-mods” and Pony Cars, the Scottsdale auctions are now dominated by great sports cars, Classics and custom cars.

The turnaround has been dramatic. Barrett-Jackson returned to its roots with a Salon collection assembled by Gordon McCall that posted curve-setting numbers: seven cars hammered sold for $1 million or more when Barrett-Jackson hadn’t seen a million-dollar transaction since 2009′s Ford Tri-Motor airplane, and a million-dollar car since 2008.

Artcurial Retromobile 2012 – Auction Preview

The Artcurial Motorcars Retromobile auction will be staged Friday 3rd February 2012 at the Retromobile Show in Paris.

Artcurial has assembled a strong collection of motor cars, automobilia and motorcycles for their 2012 Retromobile auction, headlined by the sale of cars from the former collection of Jean-Claude Bajol: a Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder with factory hardtop – formerly owned by the French filmmaker Roger Vadim, a Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada Aluminium, a Lancia B24 S Cabriolet and many other rarities.

Bonhams Paris Sale 2012 – Auction Preview

Bonhams will hold its flagship Paris auction on Thursday 2 February 2012 at La Halle Freyssinet in Paris. Over 100 cars and 35 motorcycles, including several French-built cars and three private collections, are to be sold at the auction.

Initially scheduled for 1 February 2012, Bonhams decided to move its sale to Thursday 2 February, after a competitor cancelled its sale on that day. Bonhams believes that the move to Thursday 2 February will facilitate buying opportunities for those attending the car auctions in Paris.

Gooding & Company held its 2012 Scottsdale Auction event on January 20-21 at the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall in Scottsdale, Arizona, resulting in $39.8 million in total sales and a 98% sales rate.

Gooding offered 118 lots for sale in Scottsdale, with top sale going to the alloy-bodied 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing that sold for a world-record $4,620,000.

Barrett-Jackson held its 41st annual Arizona auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale on January 15-22, 2012, resulting in more than $92 million in sales.

Top sale at the 2012 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction went a 1948 Tucker Torpedo from the Ron Pratte Collection that sold for a world-record $2,915,000.

Bonhams Scottsdale 2012 – Auction Results

The inaugural Bonhams Scottsdale auction was staged January 19th, 2012 at the Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, resulting in $5.7 million in sales and a 60% sell-through rate.

Bonhams assembled 67 automobiles for their first Arizona Auction Week sale, with a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet C taking home the top result at $667,000.

Gordon McCall Joins Barrett-Jackson

Barrett-Jackson announced that Gordon McCall joined the auction company to help launch and maintain its newly created “Salon Offering Collection” division.

McCall is well-known in the classic car community as Co-Founder and Motorsports Director of the Quail, a Motorsports Gathering and the Quail, a Motorcycle Gathering events. McCall has also served as a Judge and Field Coordinator at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for more than 25 years, in addition to founding his eponymous McCall Motorworks Revival event held each year during Monterey Week.

RM Auctions Arizona 2012 – Auction Results

RM Auctions held its 2012 Automobiles of Arizona sale on January 19-20 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix, resulting in $25.6 million in sales and a 90% sell-through rate.

The 13th annual RM Auctions Arizona sale saw 140 automobiles cross the auction block, with registered bidders representing 21 countries. Top sale went to the 1957 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Scaglietti Coupe that sold for $1,815,000, followed by the 1959 BMW 507 Roadster and the 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder – $990,000 that both made $990,000.

Mecum Kissimmee 2012 – Auction Preview

Mecum Auctions will hold its newly expanded, six-day Kissimmee Auction on January 24-29, 2012 at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida. More than 2,000 collector cars will cross the auction block, in addition to 1,500+ pieces of automotive memorabilia.

“Since the final gavel fell at last year’s event, enthusiasts and collectors have been anxiously awaiting our larger-than-life Kissimmee Auction, which we have expanded once again to encompass six full days,” said President Dana Mecum.

RM Auctions returns to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Amelia Island, Florida on March 10, 2012 for its annual Amelia Island auction.

Now in its 14th year, the official auction house of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance will showcase over 100 automobiles, with consignments including a 1934 Packard Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria and a 1929 Cord L-29 Hayes Coupe. In 2011, RM Auctions once again enjoyed the top auction results posted during the Amelia Island Concours weekend, generating $24.3 million in sales with a 96% of lots sold.

When Gooding and Company opens their 2012 auction season at the Scottsdale Fashion Square in Scottsdale, Arizona January 20th and 21st, they’ll do so with a bang as the more than 100 cars on offer will be headlined by an alloy-bodied 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing and a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider.
