Report and photos by Dennis Gray

The Carmel Concours on the Avenue 2012 was staged Tuesday, August 14th on the downtown streets of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

A field of nearly 200 automobiles were on display at the sixth edition of the Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue, vying for 14 major awards and Best of Show. This year’s event presented multi-marques from 1940 to 1973, in addition to Porsche and Ferrari from the beginning through 1989.Similar to previous years, Carmel-By-The-Sea’s Ocean Avenue was closed to traffic and sixteen blocks of downtown were filled with collector cars and related motorized items. As always, an interesting mix of automobiles were displayed in front of Carmel’s charming shops, galleries and restaurants.

Best of Show at the Carmel Concours on the Avenue 2012 was awarded to the stunning, midnight blue 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider owned by Larry Carter. In addition to the NART Spider, other notable entrants included the Ferrari 250 GT California Spider; a recently restored Porsche 911 RSR finished in the Jagermeister livery; the rowdy and raucous Trans-Am Class from the Monterey Reunion; plus a wonderful selection of 289 and 427 Cobras that included a rare Dragon Snake.

Michael G. Tillson, Chief Judge at the event, commented, “2012 has been, without a doubt, the best year ever for the Concours on the Avenue- the Trans Am class was over the top.” He went on to praise the talents of the more than 50 judges who serve at the Concours. “Their knowledge is astonishing, and they get it right and do it on time, with very tough choices in the class awards.”
