The Lancia Stratos World Meeting 2016 was staged 24-26 June in Biella, Italy. Sponsored by Zenith El Primero, this major gathering of the fabled Stratos celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Lancia’s World Rally Championship title in 1976.
Lancia presented the Bertone-designed Stratos HF prototype at the 1971 Turin Motor Show, a year after the announcement of the Stratos Zero concept car. Powered by the Dino V6 engine from Ferrari, the production of 500 cars started in 1973, allowing the Stratos to garner the homologation to participate in the 1974 World Rally Championship season. The Stratos won the World Rally Championship in 1974, 1975 and 1976 — a golden era for this legendary car.
The Stratos started a new era in rallying, as it was the first car designed from scratch for this kind of competition. With its thrilling lines and uncompromising design for rallye use, the Stratos won a permanent place in the hearts of its worldwide fans with its outstanding performance. Behind the engine, behind the design, there is a lot of passion and perseverance that has been animated by men who share the legendary destiny of the Stratos. Lancia team manager Cesare Fiorio, British racer/engineer Mike Parkes, factory rally driver Sandro Munari with Bertone’s Designer Marcello Gandini and engineer and driver Claudio Maglioli are some of them. The Zenith El Primero World Stratos Meeting 2016 was also and opportunity to celebrate those who dreamed, lived and did the Stratos.
Cesare Fiorio, former team manager of Lancia’s factory World Rally Championship team, commented, “The Stratos made its place in the history books of motor-racing in the greatest way possible. It will be remembered because it is a supreme example of what is achievable with perseverance, skill and a lot of courage.”
